Late 18th Century Decorative Mother of Pearl Fan, By Repute From the Property of Empress Charlotte of Mexico with carved and pierced sticks and guards, carved central cartouche of figures seated in a pastoral landscape, painted in gold, silver and bronze, a hand painted paper mount depicting figures seated listening to a young girl playing a stringed instrument, and a ruined castle to the reverse, 27cm Provenance: with a copy of the original bill of sale between Antonio Del Conde and John Lassman, New York, 1919. Also a copy of a handwritten letter dated 1913 purporting the fan to have belonged to Empress Charlotte. Empress Charlotte (1840-1927) was the only daughter of Leopold I, King of Belgium (1790-1865). Charlotte married Archduke Maximilian of Austria and after Napoleon III and the French took over Mexico he was crowned and served as King, The Emperor of Mexico.

August Gaul 1869 Großauheim bei Hanau - 1921 BerlinDrei Pinguine. 1903/1911.Bronze, schwarzbraun patiniert, teils vergoldet. Gabler 107-1. Seitlich auf der Plinthe mit dem Namenszug `A.Gaul`. 17,5 x 20,5 x 14 cm (6,8 x 8 x 5,5 in), Gesamthöhe 23,5 cm. Auf schwarzem Marmorsockel.1903 fertigt August Gaul einen Brunnenentwurf mit zwei Seelöwen und zwei Pinguingruppen für die Stadt Münster. Jedoch wird dieser Entwurf vom Oberregierungspräsidenten aufgrund der Tierauswahl, die nichts mit Münster zu tun habe, abgelehnt. Auch ein zweiter Entwurf Gauls mit Auerochsen findet keinen Anklang in Münster, jedoch lässt das Preußische Ministerium diesen Brunnen stattdessen in Königsberg aufstellen. Die beiden Seelöwen-Figuren des ersten Brunnenentwurfes werden 1903 in kleiner Form von der Porzellanmanufaktur Meißen in Porzellan und Böttgersteinzeug ausgeführt. Künstlerischer Leiter in Meißen war zu dieser Zeit der mit Gaul befreundete Bildhauer Max Esser. Erst 1911 greift Gaul auch eine der Pinguingruppen wieder auf. Da er sie anders als die Seelöwen deutlich überarbeitet, kann sie als eigenständiges Werk angesehen werden. Nachdem Gaul bereits bei der Fischotter-Bronze im Jahr 1902 kleine Partien der Oberfläche vergoldete, nutzt er diese Technik bei den Pinguinen nun großflächig für die feine, charakteristische Fellzeichnung der Tiere. Dabei zeigt er seine besonderen Fähigkeiten, die er als Jugendlicher während seiner Ausbildung zum Ziseleur lernte. Dass Gaul sich gut acht Jahre nach dem Münsteraner Brunnenentwurf wieder mit der Pinguingruppe befasst, mag im Zusammenhang mit einem weiteren Brunnenauftrag stehen. 1911 erwirbt der Berliner Industrielle und Kunstsammler Franz Oppenheim über den Kunsthändler Paul Cassirer einen Brunnen mit vier Pinguinen von August Gaul, der speziell für den Garten seiner Wannsee-Villa angefertigt wird. Auch hier findet sich bei den in Bronze ausgeführten Tieren wieder die charakteristische Vergoldung, die jedoch für eine Außenaufstellung sehr ungewöhnlich ist. Ein weiteres Mal fertigt Gaul ab 1914 einen weiteren Pinguinbrunnen für den Hamburger Stadtpark. 19th Century Japanese black lacquer five case inro by the Kajikawa family, having gold foliate decoration, signed Kajikawa Saku with tsubo shaped seal Ei, with a bronze ojime and an ivory two part manju by Koju, carved with Fukurokuju to one side and with a bird in flight to the other, signed, height of inro 9.5cm, diameter of manju 4cm Manju has slight nibbling to the rim at one point extending approximately 5mm of the circumference and 1mm in depth, some very light rubbing to the gilding on the inro and some very light nibbling around the top and bottom oval edges - ** General condition consistent with age
Pair of Chinese champlevé on bronze vases, each having typical stylised foliate decoration on a pale blue ground, the shoulders with a Greek key band, 18.5cm high Some flakes and chips to the surface and some pitting, one vase has two flake which extend approximately 8mm in diameter which is through to the base metal, due to the crude nature of this type of cloisonné the condition is somewhat subjective and would recommend viewing in person - ** General condition consistent with age

Chinese bronze tripod censer bearing an apocryphal sixteen character Xuande mark, 13.25cm wide Looking inside the censer there is a foundry patch approximately 40mm x 30mm which is faintly visible on the exterior as a small jagged edged oval insert measuring approximately 20/25mm in diameter, looking again into the base two of the depressions above the feet are sealed above the third foot there isn`t a depression but there is a small rectangular slot approximately 8mm x 3mm but as this is above the foot it cannot be seen from the exterior - ** General condition consistent with age
Chinese bronze censer of quatrefoil form, the cover with two apertures, bird masks to the side and standing on four squat feet, 10cm wide There was possibly originally a knop which is no longer present, the underside of the cover shows a blob of solder, the top a rectangular patch where the knop was once fitted, the base has one shallow dent to one of the lobes approximately 20mm in diameter, the whole with much surface oxidisation as apparent in the images - ** General condition consistent with age

An Egypt medal with bar Alexandria 11th July , whilst on HMS Sultan. Medal named to Lt L A De Sausmarez HMS Sultan. An Order of Osmanieh 4th Class, from the Sultan of Turkey.. A Khedives Star unnamed as issued dated 1882. A Royal Humane Society Bronze medal named to L A de Sausmarez. Sub Lt. HMS Myrmidon. 1st June 1868. Successful award with Vit.Ob. Serv.D.D.Soc.Reg.HVM reverse. Also the matching miniature group, both mounted for wear. A framed Citation from the Sultan of Turkey awarding the 4th Class Order of Osmanieh to Lionel Andros de Sausmarez. Frame 15.3/4"" x 23.3/4"". (Medal sold in Lawrences in a previous sale 14/11/2013) .Obituary 1929 March . Commander L A de Sausmarez Albert Medal RN. Rtd. The third son of Captain Philip de Sausmarez, died at East Moseley Lodge, East Moseley on the 25th last. He entered the Navy in 1860 he was promoted to Sub Lt in 1866. His mother was the only child of Lt Col F Barlow of the 61st Regt, who fell at Salamanca. While he was an officer of the watch on the anti slavery patrols on HMS Myrmidon,an able seaman who could not swim, called William Torrance aged 26 years fell overboard. Without hesitation S/Lt de Sausmarez aged 21 jumped in to save him. In shark infested waters the rescue took place, where despite strong currents he towed Torrance to the bank and awaited a boat. He received the Bronze Albert Medal (A scrap cutting states first such award to an officer) and the Royal Humane Society Bronze medal. In all Commander de Sausmarez has rescued six people, during his naval career. As Senior Lt of HMS London he was for three years actively engaged against the Slave Trade, for which he was mentioned in despatches. This for entering a narrow Creek and cutting out a slaver Dhow, under heavy fire. during the Egyptian war he was the Senior Lieutenant of HMS Sultan, serving as such during the Bombardment of Alexandria July 1882. Two days later he was sent ashore and commanded the party in charge of the gate leading to the Palace and Ras-el-Tin Gun Battery. He was again mentioned in despatches and awarded the Egypt Medal with bar, the Khedives Bronze Star, the Order of Osmanieh 4th Class. He retired from the Royal Navy in 1883 with the rank of Commander. He was Managing Director of The Army & Navy Cooperative Society. Commander de Sausmarez was educated at Elizabeth College, he was the father of three daughters. A copy of the funeral arrangements mentions that his medals, sword and cocked hat were placed on the coffin, without flowers as per his wishes. AN AIRCREW EUROPE OBE (Civil) MBE (MILITARY) GROUP. A group awarded to FO (Navigator) G D (Lofty) Mitchell MBE Military RAF. In later civil life it would appear that he was awarded the OBE prior to his death. His MBE was awarded for his war and post war service in the RAF. Mounted for wear is an MBE, 1939/45 & Aircrew Europe Stars with France & Germany bar, also an MID emblem on the War Medal. His MID was in the London Gazette 1-1-1945 George Duncan Mitchell was a specialist in Research at the Social Science and Administration Department. He published the book Parish Council and Rural Communications. His promotion from Flying Officer to Flight Lieutenant was in the London Gazette 25/1/1965. Cased silver Life Saving Merit Award named to G D Mitchell 1938. Another L S award in bronze named to M E C Miller 1938. Framed RCAF Sqdn 426 crest, where he is believed to have trained.
