1st-2nd century AD. A group of three silver figurines, each of a canine reclining with front paws and tail extended, one with gilded head. Cf. Henig, M. Religion in Roman Britain, p. 57 fig. 17 for the hound from Lydney, Gloucestershire. 7.60 grams total, 21-22mm (3/4"). Fine condition.Property of a European gentleman living in London; acquired in the UK before 1980. These are probably votive offerings made at the shrine of a healing deity, such as Aesculapius, Hygia or Apollo. The lick of a dog was believed to have curative properties and they were used at particular healing shrines as part of the medicinal process. Similar figurines, but in bronze, have been found at the healing temple of Nodens at Lydney, Gloucestershire. [3]

Very rare.Private collection, UK; formed in the 1980s.The raised lines and hatching to both sides and edges of this axe result from the stone mould being deliberately and carefully incised and this feature is apparently unrecorded; it seems likely that the presence of these lines would have greatly assisted when hafting the axe, preventing the blade slipping in the socket, so a practical purpose rather than being of simple 'ornament' character.
