A curved miniature bronze axe-head Scandinavian type pendant (also widespread in the historical Rus region), with a long slicing blade and horns to the inner edges; the thick neck pierced for suspension; punched motif to the neck. Cf. Korshyn, V.E. Yazcheskye Priveski Drevnei Rusi X-XIV Vekov, volume I, Moscow, 2013, item D.2.02-03. 15 grams, 50mm (2"). From an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000. Known as an axe of Perun amulet, these are mostly found in Russia and parts of Scandinavia. They have been associated with the Slavic god Perun, the supreme deity of the pagan Slavs who shared many characteristics with the Viking Thor. Perun carried a weapon of similar shape and function to Thor's hammer, which was worn as an amulet by his followers. Two styles of Perun axe amulets are known; style I resembles a battle axe with a knob-like protrusion at one end. Type II (of which this is an example) show a symmetrically shaped broad blade with two horn-like protrusions diametrically opposite on the upper and lower side. Like Thor's hammer, they were worn to invoke the protection of the god. [No Reserve]
9th-12th century AD. A miniature silver axe head pendant with flared blade and suspension ring. 0.97 grams, 22mm (3/4"). From an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000. In northern Europe the cult of axes, in which axes unsuitable for practical use played an important role, is evident and supported by archaeological evidence from the Bronze Age to the end of the pagan Viking period. In the Bronze Age numerous rock carvings indicate a widespread cult of axes which should probably be understood as a fertility cult, as the phallic figures on the rock carvings suggest. Miniature axes as amulets are also documented since the late Iron Age and Viking period, with the most famous example being Mjolnir, or Thor's Hammer. It is also associated with Perun, the high god of the Slavic pantheon who has a similar function to Thor as god of thunder and lightning. [No Reserve]
