Lot 28

A WW1 casualty death plaque, awarded to the next of kin of 10187 Pte Thomas Walter Comer of the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards). To include: the bronze plaque, card transit box, the condolence slip, and most of the scarce original envelope. Notes: Pte Comer was native of Walworth, South London. According to his medal index card, he is entitled to the 1914 Star and clasp, the BWM and Victory Medal. He died on November 4th 1914 at Poperinghe. Condition: generally good. Both the plaque and card box are good. The outer paper envelope has bits torn from it, but it’s around 75% complete.

Lot 7

WW1 officer’s death plaque, commemorating Lieutenant George William Quarmby Walker of the 7th Battalion (TF) Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment. Lt Walker first entered the conflict on July 19th 1915, and was later killed in action on July 7th 1916. George was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire in the last quarter of 1895. Also include is an original order of service for George’s memorial service, and a modern photograph of George’s headstone at the Authuile Military Cemetery. Condition: generally very good. Even colour and patina to the bronze, plus the order of service is in good condition.

Lot 137

An unusual and scarce WW1 era large bronze memorial plaque, named to Captain Christopher Francis Aden Ley (1893-1918). Of oval form, cast in bronze with raised lettering. The badges of the 2 regiments are also cast in relief. The makers mark of F.Osborn & Co Ltd, London, who were known to have been memorial makers during this era. Captain Ley was the son of Sir Francis Ley 1st Baronet of Leaholm Lodge in York. Notes: Ley was gazetted as a 2nd Lt in the South Nottinghamshire Yeomanry in September 1914. He’d attained the rank of Lt by September 1917, and was given his Captaincy by November 1917. He notably served in the Gallipoli campaign from August to November 1915, and was invalided home with typhoid. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in August 1916, and was later injured during a flight in 1917. Captain Ley was killed in flying accident in 1918 while taking part in a exhibition flight on a fundraising Tank Day. At time he was attached to 40th training squadron (from the Notts Hussars), and was flying his Sopwith Camel when his misjudged a dive and struck a house. He was killed instantly in the crash. Christopher is commemorated at several places in the U.K. (along with his brother, Maurice, who was also killed in action). The circumstances as to where this plaque came from are uncertain. It is known that his father was a factory owner, and did have a memorial to his younger son mounted in the building. Captain Ley died after his father, and it remains a mystery as to where this plaque would have been sited, or if it is a ‘spare’ example. Approximately 60cm x 35.5cm - weight 8.2 kilos. Condition: generally good. patinated weathered finish where the bronze has been subjected to the elements, Given the weight of the item, pick up is strongly recommended.

Lot 50A

A WW1 casualty pair, named to SR-543 Acting Serjeant John Benjamin Clarke, Royal Fusiliers. Notes: John Benjamin Clarke died of wounds on May 8th 1917 while serving with the 13th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He is commemorated at the Etaples Military Cemetery, France. His medal index card confirms the pair as his only entitlement. Plus, a WW2 era 1939-45 war medal with card Air Ministry mailing box, a late 19th century bronze double sided medallion depicting Colonel Fred Burnaby, and Lord Randolph Churchill (complete with original fitted case). Condition: generally good. The BWM is missing its ribbon, and the victory medal retains only a short length of ribbon. Toning to the medals, plus a small amount of surface wear. The bronze medallion has a good even patina and colour.
