λ Liza Todd-Tivey (British b. 1957), Nashua and Clem, a colour patinated bronze group of a racehorse and groom, naturalistically modelled and mounted to a circular stained wood base inset with metal plaque, 31cm high, 39cm wideProvenance:Private Collection of Nick Robinson, founder of Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds, a pioneer of shared racehorse ownership in the 1980's and esteemed publisher of horseracing books and magazines.Animal sculptor Liza Todd-Tivey has portrayed the American thoroughbred alongside his groom of 26 years, Clem Brooks. This strikingly intimate and informal portrayal is the result of a 1982 commemorative commission on larger scale by Leslie Combs II, founder of Spendtrifth Farm, Kentucky, where Nashua spent his final years. Spendthrift Farm allowed casting of a limited edition of 75 bronzes on a smaller scale, such as the one presented here. Todd-Tivey has completed many private commissions of wildlife sculpture and other race horses (including models of Seattle Slew and the Canadian stallion Northern Dancer, casts of which are also included in this collection), and is the daughter of iconic actress Elizabeth Taylor and producer Mike Todd. Alongside John Skeaping, she was the only modern sculptor to be included in John Fairley's influential book, Great Racehorses in Art, first published in 1984.

A large bronze mortar on a stained wood pedestal by Johannes van Halle and Pauwels Neerincx, probably flemish, circa 1688. The flaring rim inscribed IOHANNES VAN HALLE HEEFT MIJ GEGOTEN ANNO 1688, above an acanthus and foliate frieze, the lower frieze inscribed BY MANCKEMENT VAN 'T GELDT HEEFT PAUWELS NEERINCX MY HERSTELDT 1688. Bronze pestle associated. Mortar: H. 29.5 cm. Diam. 40 cm. Pestle: L. 37 cm. Pedestal: H. 58 cm. This well cast 17th Century mortar is signed by two different founders. The lower frieze is inscribed with a short rhyme meaning 'by shortage of money Pauwels Neerincx restored me 1688'. The term 'hersteldt' probably means recast (no repairs are visible!) or finished. Possibly Van Halle prepared the cast of this mortar but ran out of money or material the so-called 'bell metal' and could not make the actual cast. Possibly Neerincx took over the cast and finished this mortar emphasizing the failure of Van Halle with his less sensitive rhyme. Provenance: Christie's Amsterdam, Auction 2855, The Decorative Arts Sale, 22 September 2010, lot 241.Condition report available onrequest.
A large Dutch bronze mortar by Gerrit Schimmel, Deventer, circa 1677. The flaring rim inscribed LAUS DEO GILLES WIBRANS 1677, above a frieze decorated with a scrolling band of six pairs of winged female herms holding a shield separated by flowers above a frieze cast with a scene of a boar hunt. H. 29.5 cm. Diam. 36.5 cm. Gerrit Schimmel took over the workshop of Henrick ter Horst in 1680. A mortar signed Henrick ter Horst with almost identical frieze decoration is illustrated in Wittop Koning I, p. 45 (WK II, p. 56). Unfortunately less is known about Gilles Wibrans in Amsterdam, Wittop Koning describes him as being a retailer for Gerrit Schimmel. In contrast with other mortars and bells which are mostly anonymous (only with inscriptions like Lof godt van al or Soli Deo Gloria), there are a few objects with the name of the retailer. Wittop Koning mentions some examples with similar inscription Gilles Wibrans (WK II, p. 58-59, nr. 5 and ill. 62 and p. 119). A bell ordered by Wibrans is illustrated in O. ter Kuile, Koper & Brons, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam 1986, p. 234, ill. 323A. Provenance: Christie's Amsterdam, Auction 2855, The Decorative Arts Sale, 22 September 2010, lot 231.Condition report available onrequest.
