After becoming the Northern Section (N.S.) champions, they faced Southern Section winners Arsenal, initially drawing 1-1, before winning the replay 2-1. The competition was played in lieu of the FA Cup, which was supended during the war years. Indeed, the medal is cast in bronze as opposed to gold, a poignant and subtle reminder as the frugality of the efforts at the Home Front.
