Upon Philpot's death in 1937 the maquette was inherited by the family and in 1968 the first two bronze casts were made by the artist's niece. Gabrielle Cross. The title of the maquette 'The Wrestlers' is a modern one and may not accurately reflect the nature of the subject

After Jacques Adnet, (French, 1901-1984), 'Le Pigeon S'Envole', a large patinated bronze of a stylised bird, the stepped base stamped Adnet, Paris 48cm (19in) Jacques Adnet (1901- 1984 ) was a French art deco designer and architect know particularly for his furniture designs using leather. He believed in design paired down with a geometrical simplicity and is quoted as remarking about his designs "What a lot of work to achieve simplicity". His furniture and designs can be found in the Elysee Palace and headquarters of UNESCO. Contemporary designers acknowledge that he created a legacy of fine design that feels "modern" even today. Likely that this is a casting from the second half of the 20th century, but in excellent condition.

After Francois Pompon, (French, 1855-1933), a patinated bronze model of a partridge, mounted on a bevelled rectangular marble base, signed in the bronze 21½ x 15cm (8 x 6in) Francois Pompon (1855-1933) was born in Burgundy and moved to Paris to study art and initially worked as an assistant to Auguste Rodin. He became famous for his stylised animals and is considered a forerunner of modern sculpture, influencing amongst others Constantin Brancusi. His most famous work, L'Ours Blanc (the White Bear) of 1922 has been frequently reproduced. The original is displayed in the Musee d'Orsay, Paris.

Euphemia Glover, (Scottish/American, 20th century), Pirouette, a bronze study of a dancer, modelled with one leg outstretched, mounted on a rough cut and polished granite base, signed in the bronze and to the underside of the base, dated 1964, New York 75cm (29in) Born in Scotland, Euphemia Glover studied in Canada and lived and worked in New York City. Her work often showed the female figure including dancing figures and girls carrying balloons. She was a member of the New York Society of Women Artists, the Pen & Brush Club and the Artist Craftsmen of New York.

Thomas Bayliss Huxley-Jones, (British, 1908-1969), a bronze model of a seated female, the model once cemented to the vendor's grandfather's a wall, unsigned 95cm (37in) Provenance: A gift to the vendor's grandfather from the artist Thomas Huxley Jones (1908 - 1968) was a British Sculptor and Head of Sculpture at Gray's School of Art Aberdeen. His work was exhibited widely, including at the Royal Birmingham Society of Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and the Royal Academy of Arts. He obtained commissions for many public works of art including Helios, the sun god outside the BBC Television Centre. His style was typically smooth and simple in profile.

After Edouard Marcel Sandoz, (Swiss, 1881-1971), a patinated bronze letter opener, originally created in 1925, brown patinated bronze modelled as a marine eel, signed 'Ed M Sandoz' 24cm (9in) Edouard-Marcel Sandoz (1881-1971) Swiss sculptor and painter who settled in Paris and was elected a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. An important artist of the Art Nouveau period, his interest in animalism (that personal identity is the biological property of a human being) led him to found the French Society of Animalists in 1933. In keeping with his motto "In art, one has to love everything: nature, science, one's fellow man….", he sculpted from life, initially focussing on the human form and later animals.

§ James Havard Thomas (British, 1854–1921) Side profile of a young woman with a plait signed with initials lower right "JHT" a bronze relief, in original black frame 16 x 10cm (6 x 4in) One of James Havard Thomas's most well known works, "Lycides', is on display at Tate Britain. The National Portrait Gallery also holds a pencil drawing completed by Thomas in 1913 of the poet Rupert Brook. Havard's beautiful marble relief of Rupert Brooke is in Rugby School Chapel, and is used as the frontispiece often to his books of poems. James Havard Thomas (1854 -1921) was a Bristol born sculptor, who studied at the Bristol School of Art and went on to further study at the Royal College of Arts having won a scholarship. He later studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. This Classical study helped establish Thomas as a respected artist and he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1872 onwards, his first solo exhibition being in 1902 at the Carfax Gallery, London. Thomas's work was much influenced by his time (1889 -1906) in Italy near Naples, where he drew inspiration from the popular Tanagra Statuettes. He would later go on to teach at the Slade, becoming Professor of Sculpture in 1915. Today his work continues to be esteemed, with paintings exhibited in several public collections including Sheffield City Art Galleries. Thomas was born in Bristol and studied at the Bristol School of Art, the R.C.A., as a National Scholar and the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Pierre-Jules Cavelier (French, 1814 -1894). He went on to become Professor of Sculpture at the Slade School in 1915. Two little scratches. Slight abrasions in two or three places.

Lot 104

After Meret Oppenheim, (German, 1913-1985), a bronze model of Giacometti's ear, initialled to reverse and numbered 32/500, with the dates 1933-1977 below, mounted on a turned wooded base 19cm (7in) Meret Oppenheim (1913 - 1985) German born Swiss Surrealist artist and photographer. A member of the Surrealist movement along with Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst. In 1932 she moved to Paris, the following year meeting Alberto Giacometti who invited her to participate in the Surrealist exhibition in the Salon des Surindependants of that year. Her best known piece of work , 'Object (Le Dejeuner en fourrure)' , is a teacup, saucer and spoon covered in gazelle fur. It is displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A major retrospective of her work was held in 2013 in Berlin with lenders including David Bowie and Ursual Hauser. An etching by Oppenheim of Giacometti's ear was sold at Bonhams in 1999.
