The Earl Haig Fund being a charity set up in 1921 by Field Marshall Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, to raise funds for ex-servicemen. Anna Guérin - who produced and sold silk poppies for disabled ex-servicemen - convinced Earl Haig to use the bloom as its symbol. This continued until 1994 when the name "Poppy Appeal" was adopted.
