Machinery needs to be overhauled.Measurements: 40 x 23,5 x 10 cm.On a gilt bronze base, covered with chiselled foliage in the form of fretwork, rests the figure of a troubadour playing what must have been a lute (the instrument has been lost). Pair of leopards. Benin, 20th century.Cast bronze.Sizes: 37,5 x 54 x 11,5 cm and 32,5 x 32,5 x 9,5 cm.Pair of leopards made entirely in cast bronze. Benin bronzes had a variety of functions in Beninese ritual and courtly life. Although they are more naturalistic pieces than the vast majority of African totems, they are governed by a marked staticism and hieratic sense, as can be seen in the pair of leopards on offer here.

Lot 44

JEAN BAPTISTE FROMAGEAU (France, 1743-1793).Louis XV commode, third quarter of the 18th century.Rosewood and marquetry of bois de violette. Bronze handles and ornaments. Grey Sainte Anne marble top.Stamped on the two corners (under the envelope).Measurements: 88 x 126 x 63 cm.French Louis XV tumbeau commode made by the popular cabinetmaker Jean Baptiste Fromageau, active in Paris between 1755 and 1777. This piece of furniture dates from the last quarter of the 18th century and is almost entirely rococo, although the geometric veneering, appropriate to the structure, indicates a move towards the neoclassical language. The structure, with its bulging elevation, undulating profiles and sinuously cut chamfered corners, is still clearly rococo, as are the applied bronzes. These are mainly soft vegetal forms, clearly rococo, which even maintain the asymmetry typical of the first stage of this language, as can be seen in the front skirt or in the keyhole escutcheons. However, the tendency towards symmetry that marks the advance towards neoclassicism can already be seen in the handles, still worked with the naturalism of rococo, and the bronzes of the corners. The piece is made of bois de violette, an exotic wood used for veneering and marquetry, which was very popular in the 18th century. This wood, which belongs to the rosewood family, is mottled with purple and white highlights. It is a chest of drawers with three drawers, with two drawers in the lower ones and two in the upper one, although the decoration simulates the same structure as in the lower two drawers. Thus, we can see a false coat-of-arms in the centre, given that the real ones are the ones behind the handles of the two drawers. This symmetry, together with the geometric compartmentalisation, are clearly neoclassical elements. The son of a master carpenter, Jean Baptiste Fromageau set up his workshop in the rue Traversière before moving to the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where he made his workshop one of the most important in Paris. His abundant production was very varied, and he specialised in luxury cabinetmaking and simple carpentry. He ceased his activity in 1777. He then retired for a time to Versailles before returning to Paris where, in 1781, he directed the Hôtel de Russie. Today Fromageau's works can be found in international museums, such as the Museum für Kunsthandwerk in Frankfurt.

Lot 45

Pair of vases; Napoleon III period, last third of the 19th century.Gilt bronze and onyx d'Algérie.Measuremets: 66 x 28 x 28 cm.Pair of urns that presents an ovoid recipient made of white onyx, which has some brownish streaks that give a totally expressive character to the piece. The rest of the ornamental elements that make up both vessels are made of gilded bronze, cast in relief and with cold-chiselled details. They consist of a typically Empire base, prismatic, sharp-edged and smooth, on which the foot is placed directly, consisting of a bronze base with decorative vegetal elements, worked in the synthetic and refined style typical of the period. The bronze ornamentation is particularly notable for the quality of the chiselling, which reproduces the aesthetics of filigree work with great expressiveness. The ovoid shape of the body is surmounted by a long neck that forms the junction with the vessel, which is ovoid in the orientalist style. The side knockers next to the mouth are also noteworthy, as they take the anthropomorphic form of a dragon's head.Orientalism was born in the 19th century as a consequence of the romantic spirit of flight in time and space. The first Orientalists sought to reflect the lost, the unattainable, in a dramatic journey destined from the outset to fail, and for this reason they adopted aesthetic forms based on an idealised vision of Orientalist culture.

Lot 47

Harness. France, late 19th century.Porcelain and bronze. It does not preserve a needle.Measurements: 50 x 41 x 22 cm (clock); 49 cm (candelabra height).Garniture consisting of two five-light candlesticks and a table clock, all three pieces entirely made of gilt bronze and decorated with enamelled porcelain. It is a set of historicist design, baroque in inspiration but harmoniously combining elements from different periods in a fanciful combination. The body of both the clock and the candlesticks are decorated with magenta enamelled porcelain, with pavilions on the inside depicting bucolic scenes and floral motifs framed by gilt scrolls. The clock face, with Roman numerals and putti decoration, is framed by a vegetal border.

Lot 52

AUGUSTE MOREAU (France, 1834 - 1917)."Mother and daughter".Sculpture in patinated bronze.Signed on the base.Measurements: 56 x 27 x 25 cm.Graceful female figure in bronze together with a girl by her side, whose timeless beauty of classical inspiration and stylised canon is typical of the French sculptor Auguste Moreau. The son of the painter Jean Baptiste Moreau, Auguste began his training as a pupil of his older brother Mathurin. He made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1861, where he participated regularly until 1913. He was also a member of the Société des Artistes Français. His themes - genre, pastoral, allegorical scenes - and his style, realistic and graceful, link him to other members of the Moreau dynasty. He mainly produced bronzes, but also worked in marble and occasionally combined bronze and gold ("Victrix enfant", presented at the 1897 Salon). He produced numerous editions of his works, which were in great demand by the public both for their themes, which were very fashionable at the time, and for their naturalism and graceful beauty. Works by Auguste Moreau can be seen in the Museums of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, Dijon, Gray and Reims, as well as in private collections both in France and abroad (he was especially published in the United States).

Lot 53

EMILE LOUIS PICAULT (Paris, 1833 - 1915)."Le Devouement.Patinated bronze.Signed on the base.Measurements: 57 x 20 x 20 cm.Sculptor and medallist, Émile Louis Picault was a disciple of the Dutch sculptor Louis Royer. He developed his activity in Paris, and participated in the Salons des Artistes Français between 1863 and 1909. His success at the Salons brought him great recognition and his works were in great demand. His abundant oeuvre focused mainly on allegorical and literary themes, figures of warriors and mythological heroes, often accompanied by slogans in Latin or French. He also produced works inspired by the Modern Age, in the "art troubadour" style, worked in a style close to that of the neo-Florentines. His pieces have been the subject of numerous editions in bronze by prestigious firms such as Susse and Colin et Houdebine. Émile Picault is currently represented in the French museums of Orsay, Chambery, Clermont-Ferrard, Troyes and Mauberge, as well as in the Renfe Contemporary Sculpture collection.

SUSY GÓMEZ (Pollença, Mallorca, 1965)."The world for an instant...".CAM publisher, 2004.Bronze sculpture.Signed with initials.Size: 6 x 40 x 10 cm.Susy Gómez studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona and, after completing her training, held her first solo exhibition at the Norai gallery in her home town in 1987. Six years later, in 1993, her solo exhibition at the Miró Foundation in Barcelona caused great expectation. His work is characterised by great technical versatility, encompassing painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, video and installation. In 1995 she took part in the ARCO fair, achieving a success that led her to be included in important national and international group exhibitions, such as the Salón de los 16 of the same year. Since then she has held numerous personal exhibitions, both in Spanish cities and in Turin, Athens and Nice, where she showed her work at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In 1999 he was awarded the Endesa Scholarship, and the following year the IVAM's Centre del Carmen dedicated its first retrospective to him. In his work we can find various proposals, which continue the tradition of post-minimalism, and which at the same time are linked to the most current aesthetics.

Lot 88

Louis Philippe period table clock. France, ca. 1840.Gilt and patinated bronze.Honoré Pons movement. The pendulum and the bell are missing. The machinery needs restoration.Measurements: 41 x 29 x 10 cm.Table clock made in gilded and patinated bronze at the beginning of the 19th century. The piece has been conceived through a sculptural concept characteristic of this period. It consists of a base with sharp edges, reflecting the taste for clean volumes characteristic of the aesthetics of the period. On the upper part of the base, which is extensively decorated with a vegetal pattern in relief, stands a gallant man dressed in the 18th-century style. The latter rests on the clock case, which is inscribed on the base of what appears to be a cut tree. The gilt-bronze dial has Breguet-type hands and Roman numerals. Scenes of this type were very common in the decoration of table clocks, often depicting mythical or religious figures, linked to a historicist sense and aesthetic.

Lot 89

In 1902, the Board of Trustees awarded him a scholarship. The following year, he was awarded the Michael Beer Prize for his "Judgement of Solomon". In 1909, he created one of his few major works, a monument to the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn at the Jewish Boys' School. He also designed porcelain figurines for the Schwarzburg Porcelain Workshops, the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin and the Rosenthal Manufactory.During the First World War, he visited several prisoner-of-war camps, where he created thirty-seven sculptures depicting the various ethnic types and nationalities among the prisoners. These were intended to be placed in a proposed "Reichskriegsmuseum" (National War Museum), which was never completed. As late as 1930, it was receiving monetary awards from the Prussian Ministry of Culture. This ended abruptly in 1933, when the National Socialist Party came to power and began rejecting his applications because of his 'non-Aryan race'.
