Much build up of old deposits of dust and smoke from having been in a gentleman's club for many decades. Slate/marble base damaged. The bronze never cleaned or repatinated. It is understood to have been always on the contemporary wooden pedestal with which it is offered and before entering the present local private ownership was for most of the 20th century in a gentlemans/private members club in one of the British Dominions

A SILVERED BRONZE COMMEMORATIVE STATUETTE OF CAPT W P NEVILL CHARGING THE GERMAN POSITIONS WITH RIFLE AND FOOTBALL, C1916-20 on ebonised base with engraved tablet B COY 8TH BATTALION THE EAST SURREY REGT AT THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME 1ST JULY 1916, 13.5cm h, the underside with (worn) ivorine retailer's label, in fitted oak box This statuette commemorates one of the most bizarre yet heroic events of the Great War. Capt. Nevill, who was killed early in the charge, urged his men to dribble two footballs across the mile and quarter of no man's land, both of which were inscribed with rousing messages to inspire the men to victory. Of the two (or possibly four) footballs one is in the PWRR Museum at Dover and the other was lost in the fire that destroyed the National Trust property Clandon Park in April. ++Polish wear and residues but complete and undamaged, no replated and scarce

A DUTCH WALNUT, MARQUETRY AND CARVED BUREAU, DATED '1687', 19TH C the stepped serpentine interior with well and secret compartment, the sides also decorated, bronze rococo handles, 114cm h; 59 x 125cm Provenance: Given by the Soviet Ambassador to the United Kingdom to his Mayfair barber as a memento to the friendship arising from the hairdresser's regular visits to the Embassy during World War Two, on the former's recall to Moscow in either 1943 or 1946 (presumably either Ivan Mikhaylovich Mayskiy or Fyedor Tarasovich Guser); thence by descent to the present vendor. ++A particularly good example, note the quality of the marquetry and details such as the tulips, the sides with several shrinkage cracks. Small let in repair to the centre of the front above the top drawer. Small restoration carried out for the present vendor by Revill Bros of Retford Nottinghamshire in 1981, copy invoice available
