LOTS 287-322 From the Scholar's Desk - Fine Seals and Other Literati Works of Art A collector since childhood, the father of the present owner was a dealer and, as so often the case, also a collector in a different field. All the following lots were bought in England over the last sixty years. Please note: The illustrated seal characters on each base have been reversed to facilitate reading. A bronze Seal, late Ming dynasty, in the form of a goat with long, back-curved horns, 3.4cm The seal characters read: Jian Wei Xiao Wei (made for Jianwei, Military Captain/Colonel). The goat is the eighth sign of the animal zodiac and, amusingly, here has been given paws rather than hoofs. CONDITION REPORT: Good condition, given typical wear. No obvious faults.
A miniature bronze Seal, 18th century or later, of a mythical dog-like beast with central horn, its fur marking incised, square plinth, 3.5cm The seal characters read: Tie Geng Shan Ren, which could also be the art name of Lei Yue (1882-1933). CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
A bronze Seal, Ming dynasty, of a kylin seated on its back legs with bushy tail, long ears, central horn and wisps of fire on its fore-shoulders, signs of long use, characters ground, 4cm CONDITION REPORT: Some knock marks to side of base, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
An attractive and rare silver Seal, late 16th/first half 17th century of a goggle-eyed, grinning Buddhist lion, the fur details sharply engraved, 3.8cm The seal characters read: Jin Yan (owner's name). Compare with the bronze scroll weight illustrated in China's Renaissance in Bronze, the Clague Collection, Robert D. Mowry, Phoenix Art Museum, 1994, no. 47. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
An interesting small bronze Seal, possibly Song (960-1279) or earlier, in the simplified form of a duck on stylised legs on the square plinth, considerable signs of oxidisation (presumably from burial) and corrosion, 2.4cm The seal characters are somewhat crudely engraved. The duck bears similarities to the Burmese, so-called, 'opium weights', but this may be coincidental. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
A powerful bronze Seal, possibly 16th century, in the form of a chimera in tightly-curled form with bifid tail, flames and ribbons extending over the edges of the square base, details finely engraved, leg missing, drilled hole, nose dented, 4.8cm The seal characters read Huangdi Fengtian zhi Bao (a typical Imperial seal from the Ming dynasty, used in the annual ceremonies of prayers to Heaven). The likelihood is that the missing leg failed in casting and was replaced at the time, but has subsequently disappeared. CONDITION REPORT: Knock mark to side of base, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
A bronze Seal, 16th/17th century, simply, but effectively modelled as a single-horned, mythical beast squatting with up-raised head, 5.5cm The seal characters read: Chengshi hanmo (a seal belonging to someone whose surname was Cheng and made specifically for use with calligraphy). As is frequently pointed out by Rose Kerr in her ground-breaking Later Chinese Bronzes, V&A, 1990, dating bronzes from the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties is fraught with problems. However, the present seal characters are enclosed by chilong close in handling to those cast on the leg of a tripod censer illustrated op cit, pl. 23, and dated to 16th/17th century. CONDITION REPORT: Some small knock marks to side of base, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
A bronze Seal of a Chimera, late Ming dynasty, seated with turned head and bifid horn, the details incised, the front of the square plinth engraved Lu Guan, 3.7cm The seal characters read: xu shou guo shou (calm acceptance of the country's seal). CONDITION REPORT: Some knock marks to edges and side of base, commensurate with age, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
A bronze Paperweight cum Brush Rest, probably late Ming dynasty, in the form of the si xiren, two smiling conjoined boys forming four, their clothes engraved with scrolling lotus and holding either a toy or linked rings, signs of red lacquer, wear from use, minor dents, 7.8cm, wood stand (2) The 'Four Happy Boys' are a common toggle in China and come in a variety of materials but this, and the following lot, would function either as a paperweight and/or a brush rest. The boys evoke four happy events: one's wedding night, a chance meeting with an old friend, passing one's exams and rain after a drought. In fact, there are more complex meanings attributed to the conjunction, see Hidden Meanings, Terese Tse Bartholomew, Asian Art Museum, 2006, no. 2.11. The boys also could be considered as forming the Buddhist emblem wan (ten thousand) or swastika, meaning 'Good Luck'. CONDITION REPORT: Traces of painted decoration, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.
Another bronze 'Happy Boys' Weight, late Ming dynasty, similarly cast and engraved to the previous, but with more lacquer remaining, wear and dents, 7.5cm, wood stand (2) Red lacquer, used on both these groups, signifies 'joy'. CONDITION REPORT: Lacquer decoration missing on limbs and heads, some still remaining on torso's, otherwise no obvious faults. Provenance: as per catalogue.

CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults. 8.5cm long. Provenance: as per catalogue.
A bronze Incense Burner, Cover and Stand, 18th/19th century, the depressed globular body with a wide band of key fret and two sprung handles, resting on elephant head handles, the pierced domed cover with a chilong and tiger snarling at one another, detachable tripod base, the burner with cast mark in seal characters Jia chuan zhen wan, 28cm, brass ash shovel (4) CONDITION REPORT: LID - slightly misshapen. Both elephant mask handles soldered. Later jewelled beads applied. Later paper decoration applied to elephant cloth.
A pair of gilt-bronze Attendant Figures, late Ming Dynasty, one holding a censer, the other with hands in prayer and wreathed in ribbons, standing on waisted square plinths, worn red and gilt patination, 17.5 and 18cm (2) CONDITION REPORT: Both figures with gilding rubbed, commensurate with handling and age. Hole to rear of head and back.
A bronze Paperweight, in the form of a dappled deer, Ming Dynasty, 11cm, a pair of Chinese Immortals, each riding a deer and detachable as incense burners, 7.8 and 8.2cm, and a Japanese bronze Lobster, some legs missing, 24cm (6) CONDITION REPORT: Holes to rear of tail and underside of body due to thin casting. Two legs 50% missing, one further leg with through crack.
A bronze Avalokitesvara, late Ming, the goddess sitting cross-legged on a waisted lotus throne, flames on her upper arms with a vase and bird and in Kaludra Mudra, her chest with jewels and a diadem on her head, traces of red and black lacquer and gold leaf, 27cm CONDITION REPORT: Traces of paint and gilding remaining, otherwise no obvious faults.
A bronze Monk, probably late Ming Dynasty, standing in robes, his hands in prayer, on a lotus gadrooned base, a ribbon tied at his shoulder, the cranium replaced in lead, 25.5cm This figure, which was heavily cast inverted, probably developed a fault at the bottom of the mould. Rather than throw the entire piece back in the pot, they chose to fill the hole in his head with lead and patinate it. CONDITION REPORT: A hole to the lower part of robe. Knocks and dents throughout. Solder repair to head.
A bronze Censer, second half of the 17th century, thinly cast and with two lion mask handles with finely chased manes, six character Xuande mark, dents, 14.5cm, pierced wood cover with detached coral knop (2) CONDITION REPORT: Knop has been reglued.
