A WW2 era Japanese Shin-Gunto sword.Fish skin grip with wrapped handle.71.8cm blade length, bronze alloy mounts and menuki.Polished steel scabbard and leather cover.Total length with scabbard 101cm.Notes: we have not been able to view the tang for signatures.The blade would appear to be of WW2 vintage, but the bronze mounts may be of later production.Condition: generally good.Some wear to the fish skin grip, plus the leather scabbard cover is of mottled appearance.The handle bindings are intact, with all metal fittings being secure.The blade is well marked, and unsharpened.The steel scabbard is a little pitted in areas, and has very minor corrosion.

A selection of German WW2 and earlier medals.To include: a War Merit cross with swords (marked 33 to suspension ring), 2 War Merit medals, a West Wall medal with paper envelope (lacking a ribbon), a bronze grade German Mothers Cross, a 1938 Sudetenland Medal, a RAD service medal (likely a reproduction, plus incorrect ribbon), plus a WW1 era Brunswick War Merit cross 2nd class.8 items.Condition: generally good to most items.Some oxidisation to the West Wall medal, plus wear to the packet.The Mothers Cross has lost almost all of its enamel.The RAD service medal appears to be a cast copy with a gilt finish, and is lacking detail to the design.

An interesting collection of Victorian through to WW2 items of Militaria, all relating to two families.To include: 2 scarce 19th century army pay books with leather covers.One named to Richard Mordecai, who enlisted with the Royal Artillery on October 17th 1894, aged 16 years and 2 months.The other is named to a Thomas Mordecai, who enlisted with the Royal Artillery on March 6th 1863 aged 19 years and 2 months (this is father and son).You can faintly see Thomas’ name inked on to the leather cover.Included with the first paybook is also a WW1 period photograph of Richard Mordecai, he is dressed in civilian clothes, but appears to be at an army camp.Online records show that there was a Richard Mordecai who enlisted on July 17th 1918 aged 40 years 11 months, in the Army Pay Corps, so this may explain this photograph.Plus, a WW1 BWM and Victory medal named to 1277 GNR J R Soulsby Royal Artillery (this is confirmed as his full entitlement).It’s likely that GNR Soulsby also served during WW2 on the home front, as there is also a Defence Medal and 2 sterling ARP lapel badges.There is also a 2nd type (1949-1952) George VI Special Constabulary Long Service Medal, named to James C. Saddleton, 2 x 1902 base metal Edward VII coronation medals, a bronze 1935 jubilee medal for the Borough of Tynemouth, an Edward VIII base metal coronation medal, and a Robert Raikes Sunday school medal.14 items total.Condition: varies across items.The leather covered pay books are worn to the used pages, and the paper has become brittle in place and broken away.There is still enough information available in each to discern who they belonged to.The medals are all good, as are the badges.

An exceptionally rare, and possibly unique WW1 / Interwar / WW2 medal group awarded to Captain, later Major W.J.C. Phillips of the Supply & Transport Corp, and 3/5th Mahratta Light Infantry.Comprising of the BWM and Victory Medal (both unnamed as were issued in India, the General Service Medal (with rank as Captain) with the very rare Southern Desert Iraq clasp, and the South Persia Clasp.Plus, the 1939-45 star, Africa Star, Burma Star, 1939-45 War Medal with bronze oak leaf for being mentioned in dispatches, the 1939-45 India Service Medal, and the 1937 Coronation Medal (with rank as Major).Notes: the Southern Desert Iraq clasp was generally only awarded to personnel serving in the R.A.F, and these themselves are very rare.Awards to British officers serving in non R.A.F units are almost unheard of, with only one other example known having been offered for sale (the group awarded to Major Charles Lyons Mervyn Voules of the Mahratta Light Infantry).The Lyons GSM did not also have the S.Persia clasp that the Phillips example does.The full sized group is swing mounted for wear, and is accompanied by the corresponding court mounted miniature medal group.The medal group is accompanied by multiple pages of copied research papers, including his WW1 era medal index card that confirms the award of his GSM with the rare clasp combination, plus copy photographs of Major Phillips in his uniform.William Joseph Christopher Phillips was born on December 7th 1896.He was originally commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the 3rd Royal Dublin Fusiliers on April 30th 1915.He attained the rank of Lieutenant in January 1917, and was later posted to the Indian army in June 1917.A promotion to Temporary Captain followed in December 1918, and later Captain in 1920.His oak leaf for being mentioned in dispatches was gazetted in April 1945 for gallant and distinguished service - at this time he was a temporary Lt-Col in the 2nd Punjab Regiment.Condition: very good all round.Usual age related toning to the medals plus a small amount of fading to the ribbons.

A scarce WW1 Canadian casualty group, named to 249282 Pte Maurice Gillespie 58th Canadian Infantry.Comprising of; The Canadian Memorial Cross, named to the reverse and also marked ‘Sterling’, the British War Medal, Victory Medal, and a bronze Memorial Plaque.Plus, the original Memorial Cross box and condolence slip, the original car medal box, the original paper envelope and card transit box for the death plaque, the parchment scroll, 2 period uniform photographs of Pte Gillespie, a period photograph of Pte Gillespie’s original wooden cross grave marker, a period newspaper clipping reporting on the death of Pte Gillespie, a period Burial report, plus 15 pages of research.Additionally there are 2 WW1 era Canadian base metal sweetheart brooches.Notes: Maurice Gillespie (1887-1918) was a native of Banbridge, Nothern Ireland, the only son of Kathleen Gillespie.He attested in Toronto, Canada on April 6th 1916, where he also stated that he’d had 2 years previous military service with the ‘10th Grens’.Pte Gillespie suffered a gun shot wound to the head on October 3rd 1918, and was remarked as being ‘dangerously ill’.On October 6th he remained dangerously ill, but it was noted that he ‘may be visited’.He medical report states the he died from his wounds on October 13th 1918 at the Canadian General Hospital in Etaples, France, less than a month before the cessation of hostilities.Given the location of his regiment at time he received his wound, it seemed likely that Pte Gillespie was a casualty of the Battle of Cambria.Condition: Excellent throughout - the BWM and Victory medals are complete with their original watered silk ribbons, and both medals remain in mint condition.The death plaque remains in excellent condition, as does its card transit caseThe Canadian Memorial Cross lacks its original ribbon, but instead has a white metal chain so it may be worn as a pendant.

A WW1 bronze death plaque, commemorating G/49702 Pte Ernest Walter Ward, 32nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers (East Ham).Notes: Pte E.W. Ward died on August 7th 1917, and is commemorated at the Ypres Menin Gate memorial.His medal index card states that he is also entitled to the BWM and Victory Medal.The plaque is complete with the original condolence slip and card transit box.Plus, some other WW1 interest items, to include a padded embroidered Warrant Officer’s sleeve badge, a bullion Kings Crown Warrant Officer’s sleeve badge, plus 3 metal officers ‘pips’.6 items.Condition: good.The bronze plaque has a good colour and is free from any damage.The slip and card box shows some age related wear.Both cloth badges show evidence of uniform removal and are in good condition.The ‘pips’ are also in good condition.

A scarce WW1 casualty pair, with a most unusual double issue death plaques and double issue scroll.Comprising of the British War Medal and Victory Medal, both named to 41156 Pte G. Smith, 11th Battalion Manchester Regiment (26/07/1881-06/09/1917).Plus 2 bronze memorial plaques ‘death plaques’, both named to George Smith, their accompanying scrolls, both named to Pte George Smith Manchester Regiment.There is also a large collection of related period ephemera, including 1917 dated newspapers reporting on Pte Smith’s wounding and later death, a period photograph of Pte Smith in uniform, letters sent home to his wife, and from an Army Chaplain reporting on his passing.The lot also contains George’s army death certificate and last will and testament, plus photographs of his original wooden grave marker and his later stone headstone, plus other documents.Notes: The group comes to auction directly from a family member, having never been offered for sale previously.According to information supplied by the vendor, the 2 death plaques have always been in the family, but the reasons as to the double issue are unknown.It’s possible that the double issue was a rare error by the office responsibe, but this is unable to be confirmed as there are no surviving records of plaque issues.Pte Smith’s medal index card confirms the pair as his full entitlement.Condition: generally very good - the ribbons are original to the medals, but the BMW ribbon has faded.Some of the documents are slightly fragile due to age, sand there is staining and foxing to both scrolls.Viewing of this emotive group is recommended.

A 19th century New Zealand medal, with dated reverse for 1864-1866.Named on the edge to 168 Serjt J. Pendlebury 68th Foot.Usual swivel suspender, but lacking ribbon.Notes: information supplied by the vendor (c/o Durham County Council Records Office) stars that John Pendlebury enlisted aged 19 on February 18th 1858 in the 68th Light Infantry.He served with the regiment in the New Zealand war from 1864-1866, and was subsequently awarded the New Zealand medal.He rose in rank to Sergeant and was also awarded the LSGC medal in March 1876.He retired in 1889 and was later also awarded a Meritorious Service Medal.Accompanying the medal is some research relating to John Pendlebury, a copy of his obituary, a copy of a regimental group photograph, a WW1 era Italian medal, and a bronze 1954 cricket prize medallion.3 items.Condition: wear from polishing to the New Zealand medal, but all of the details are legible.The edge of the medal has a bruise at approximately the 5 o’clock position.The Italian medal well worn, with loss of detail.The bronze medal is in good condition.

With pivoting bar and two prongs.A little bent in places.2.A War Merit Cross with swords, First Class - marked 3 for Wilhelm Deumer, Ludenscheid. With ‘coke bottle’ pin to the reverse.Securing clasp has become detached, but is still present.3.A Coastal Artillery Badge - faintly marked FLL in relief to the reverse.Gilt wash finish to the wreath and eagle has worn to the high points - retaining clasp has broken away.4. A Close Combat Clasp, silver grade - marked FLL in relief to the reverse.The clasp appears to have been ‘de-nazified’, with the swastika having been ground off. Both the pin and clasp are missing, as is the small square backing panel.5. A Close Combat Clasp, bronze grade - marked FLL in relief to the reverse.The badge appears to be complete and in good condition.6. A WW1 era German / Bavarian 11th infantry division badge - marked Deschler u. Sohn to the reverse.The pin has broken away.7. A WW2 era brass alloy ‘tinnie’ - the pin has broken away, but is present.8.A hand embroidered bullion cap cockade - some loose threads and oxidisation to the bullion.9. A white metal swastika pendant - good condition.10. 3 Third Reich era 10 pfennig coins - good condition.11. 4 piece sterling silver 19th century tea set, with Wiltshire military interest.Comprising of a teapot, coffee pot, sugar bowl, and cream jug.Notes: although the set has engraved decoration that matches across all 4 pieces, the set has been built over a period of time, with each piece having a different date letter.All pieces are named to a Pte, later Cpl S.B. Wheaton of the 1st Wiltshire Rifle Volunteers, and would appear to have been awarded as prizes between 1865 and 1873 (probably for marksmanship).It seems likely that all 4 pieces started life as plain pieces, and been later decorated in an identical style in the 1870’s.The teapot is hallmarked for London 1835, with the silversmiths mark for John Tapley.Weight 538.3g The coffee pot is hallmarked for London 1863, with the silversmiths mark for Charles Boyton.Weight 790g.The sugar bowl is hallmarked for London 1837, with the silversmiths mark for John & Henry Lias.Weight 365.3g.The cream jug is hallmarked for London 1871, with the silversmiths mark for Charles Boyton.Both the teapot and coffee pot have ivory insulating rings to the handles.Plus, a cased rifle shooting bronze medal, dated 1886, unnamed, but likely awarded to the same person.Weight 222.9gCombined weight 1916.4g / 61.61 ozt Condition: generally very good.Some normal signs of use, with light contact marks to the body, and some tiny, shallow dents to a couple of the items.Cites reference: MN58QL4U

A pair of well made late 19th century bronze and cast iron signalling canons.Bronze barrels, with touch hole, mounted upon a heavy cast iron carriage.No apparent makers marks.Approximately 46cm length x 13.5cm width.Condition: good overall patina and colour to each canon.The canons pivot freely, and the wheels move independently.2 items.

A selection of WW1 and earlier medals.To include:A Hamburg Hanseatic silvered bronze and enamel cross.2 x Belgian WW1 medals.A Bavarian war merit cross with swords.A medal for merit in war from the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen.A Wurttemburg military merit medal.Plus, a Hohenzollein commemorative medal for combatants 1848-1849.7 items.Condition: varies across medals.The enamelled cross has a small fracture to the surface on the right arm.Both Belgian medal show wear through polishing.The Wurttemburg medal appears to be made of silvered bronze, and there is wear to the surface - the suspension loop is now detached from the medal.A number of the ribbons are modern replacements.

Lot 262

WW1 Austrian enlisted man’s brass belt buckle.With retainer loops and prongs to reverse.Plus a WW2 era NSDAP public service decoration, with silvered finish and enamel detail.And, a WW2 era bronze German African campaign medal.3 items.Condition: the buckle is a little bent at the edges and some minor verdigris to the reverse side.The public service decoration is missing its original suspension, and now has a large pin as a replacement.The German African campaign medal has a good overall colour and patina, but is missing its original ribbon - there is some extremely minor verdigris spots to the front side.

WW2 era SS sleeve, machine embroidered in light grey cotton on a black backing.Made in the so called ‘hammerhead’ style.Evidence of uniform removal, with visible stitch holes in places at the edge.Plus, a WW2 era German enamel stickpin for the Reichskolonialbund (Reich Colonial League).Silvered eagle and pin, with enamel infill.Marked Ges Gesch FBH to the reverse side.And, a WW1 era gilt bronze Furs Vaterland 1914 German medal with ribbon.Condition: generally good.3 items.The SS eagle has normal signs of service wear, with loose threads to the edge and a small amount of glue residue to the right wing tip.The stickpin is good, with undamaged enamels and minimal wear to the silvered finish.The gilt bronze medal has some wear to the finish, a couple of verdigris spots, and the ribbon is fairly dilapidated.

A British No.7 MK1 bayonet and other military related items.To included: a 1948 dated No.7 bayonet, designed primarily for the Sten Gun.With paxolin grips and distinctive swivelling pommel.The blade is marked at the ricasso with ‘No7 MK1 L’ and to the other side it is faintly marked 1948 and what appears to be a letter P in a circle.This would likely related to the Poole factory, who produced around 30,000 of the 176,000 produced in total.The pommel is faintly marked ‘F5B’ and with a broad arrow mark, plus the other side is faintly marked ‘Made in UK’.Please note that the bayonet is minus its scabbard.Plus a Skean Dhu style sock knife, with citrine paste stone set into the pommel, and base metal mounts.A Irish clan badge style motif is inset into the grip, a cased Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal complete with its miniature medal and ribbon bar, a WW1 era ‘Bovril Handy-Book & Diary of the War’, 2 x Peter Hicks bronze resin military figurines, and 2 vintage Dinky armoured vehicle toys.8 items.Condition: Varies across pieces.The No.7 bayonet is good, with only normal service wear.The Skean Dhu is in good condition.The WW1 booklet is in poor condition, with loose pages and creasing.The Pingat Jasa medal appears to be virtually mint.The resin figurines are in average condition, and one has rifle that appears to have broken away.The 2 Dinky toys are play worn, with missing tracks to the tank.
