Rowan Gillespie b.1953 JOY OF LIVING (1977) Alloy, 32" high excluding base (81cm), signed and dated 1977, ed. 1/6 Rowan Gillespie , one of Ireland's most important artists is probably best known for his iconic group of figures the Famine Memorial situated on Custom House Quay in Dublin . Numerous other public sculptures Ireland . Now internationally known Gillespie was born in Dublin in 1953 to Irish parents, and spent his formative years in Cyprus. In 1970he attended the Kingston College of Art. Following his studies at York and Kingston Colleges of Art he completed his studies at the Statens Kunstole in Oslo. Whilst there he lectured for three years at the Munch Museum , the famous Norwegian painter having a profound artistic influence on him up to the present day. Also influenced by the sculptor Henry Moore with whom he met whilst studying in England and encouraged by Moore, Gillespie went on to become a master technician in the field of casting using the lost wax method to cast, unassisted , all his own work , making him unique among the bronze casting fraternity . He has exhibited widely internationally, namely in the UK, USA, Holland , Lichtenstein, and Scandinavia also completing major commissions in all of these countries . Recent commissions include a major sculpture for New York City, a commemorative sculpture in Tasmania and a superb memorial of Sir William Orpen to be situ in Dublin. In 2007 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Art by Regis University in Denver Colorado. The two sculptures featured here are a prime example of Gillespie's early work, now rare, and becoming increasingly desirable by collectors. Returning to live in Ireland in 1977 along with his young Norwegian wife Hanne, Gillespie's work was of a highly personal vision, a theme that is often repeated in his work today. These two pieces The Joy of Living (lot 30) and Ambition 11 (lot 31) convey this very personal part of his life , a joyous occasion, ambition and travelling hopefully into the future. Early promise is evident, where he was going with his life, a life that was to culminate in what was to become an outstanding and very successful career. Gillespie's work remains a testament of versatility and consistency, highly personal to him. Allied with being a master technician his vision and expert technique will ensure his continued success in the world of sculpture. These two works are of great importance symbolising part of a much larger picture of his life. Now concentrating on site specific large work this is an opportunity to acquire a beautiful example by this renowned sculptor.

Rare and fine late 17th century laburnum oyster veneered and bronze mounted strongbox, with ornate strapwork and flanking loop carrying handles, having hinged cover enclosing compartment, the hinged drop-front with internal locking catch, enclosing a pair of drawers below, 28cm wide x 16cm high x 18cm deep CONDITION REPORT Loss to area above left hand enclosed drawer below drop front, slight veneer loss left hand face top edge. Hinged lock clasp is broken off but present, although possibly incomplete. Inner sides have drilled holes for attaching strongbox to a surface, left hand hole has associated splits, fractures to left hand interior casket wall, other associated losses of central foot of each side.
