A Chinese bronze archaistic gui, probably 17th century, with dragon handles, the bodies cast in relief with bands of stylized mythical beasts and with a further band to the flared foot, the interior cast with three characters, old damage and casting faults, 31cm. Provenance: The Earl of Clanwilliam.
A large Chinese bronze incense burner and cover, 17th century, boldly cast as a standing Buddhist lion dog with its head turned to sinister, looking up and baring its teeth, a smaller lion dog clutching a brocade ball and forming the cover surmount, the body cast with flames, all raised on an elaborate hardwood stand carved with scrolls and lingzhi fungus, 40.5cm long. (3)
A monumental Khmer bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara, Angkor period, Bayon style, c.1300, cast with eight radiating arms, the hair, neck, upper arms, ankles and toes with small figures of the Buddha, with seated figures of what appear to be Prajnaparamita (The Goddess of Transcendent Wisdom) on the chest, holding various attributes, the hair in a raised chignon bearing a seated figure of Amitabha, 49.5cm. Provenance: a private Scottish collection. A metallographic analysis conducted by Frank Preusser and Associates Inc., Los Angeles is available. This figure of Avalokiteshvara, the Boddhisatva of Compassion, is a bronze version of one of the twenty three stone images of King Jayavarman VII sent to different parts of the kingdom in 1191 in memory of his father. Two other bronze radiating figures of similar size are known, an incomplete example in the Musee Guimet, and another in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, see cat. no. 97 in Angkor et dix siecles d`art Khmer, and cat. no. 28 in H W Woodward The Sacred Sculpture of Thailand: The Alexander B Griswold Collection.
A pair of late 19th Century bronze mounted pottery table oil lamps, each burner detailed `Hinks Duplex`, each squat ovoid pottery body painted with flowers on a pale blue ground, framed by a pair of bronze elephant mask and ring handles, on a bronze foliate scroll moulded base, each fitted with a glass chimney, height excluding chimney approx 40cm (one cracked).
A small rectangular bronze plaque with a male and female figure in relief, she carrying a basket containing rabbits and he with a bag over his arm and attendant sheep with a distant castle ruin beyond (10cms x 14cms) and a pair of square embossed copper panels decorated with leaves, blackberries and insects in deep relief (16cms square, as viewed, apparently trimmed after removal from a mount)
A pair of 20th century Japanese gilt heightened bronze figures of standing fishermen in traditional costume, one holding a rod in one hand and fish in the other, the other apparently removing a hook from the mouth of a fish, on wood and gilt heightened rectangular bases with bracket feet (figures approx 29cms)
