Zoologica Specifica - - Max Esser. (1885 Barth - 1945 Berlin). Biber. Nach einem Entwurf von 1939. Guss um 1970. Bronze mit dunkelbraun-schwarzer Patina. H 56 x B 36 x T 42 cm. Rückseitig auf der Plinthe signiert mit "M. Esser", mit Gießerstempel "Guss Barth Rinteln". Wohl eines von nur wenigen Exemplaren (der Guss in der Bildgießerei Barth erfolgte im niedrig, einstelligen Bereich). - Der Guss entstand um 1970 als Auftrag des Ehepaars Wolfram und Lilli Esser nach dem Originalmodell von 1939. - Der Tierbildhauer und Medailleur Max Esser erhielt seine Ausbildung an der Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums Berlin sowie an der Berliner Kunstakademie. Dort studierte er unter August Gaul. Bereits mit 21 Jahren nahm er regelmäßig an der Großen Berliner Kunstausstellung teil. Besonders bekannt sind seine Entwürfe für Porzellanfiguren. Lange Zeit war er in der Meißner Porzellanmanufaktur beschäftigt und leitete dort ein Meisteratelier. Später fertigte er auch Modelle für KPM, Rosenthal u.a. - Die Bronze nach einem Entwurf des Künstlers von 1939 für einen sitzenden Biber der KPM Berlin. Die detailliert ausgearbeitete und in leichter Körperrotation gestaltete, allansichtige Plastik zeugt hierbei von der schöpferischen Fertigkeit Essers als Tierbildhauer. - Insgesamt etw. angestaubt, vereinzelt oberflächlich leicht berieben, tls. etw. oxidiert. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten. - Wir danken Herrn Fujimi Barth der Bildgießerei Richard Barth in Rinteln für wertvolle Hinweise. Bronze with dark brown-blackish patina, after a design from 1939. Signed "M. Esser" on the reverse of the plinth, with foundry stamp "Guss Barth Rinteln". - One of only a few copies. - The sculpture was commissioned by Wolfram and Lilli Esser around 1970, based on the original cast from 1939. - The animal sculptor and medallist Max Esser is particularly known for his designs for porcelain figures. For a long time he was employed at the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, where he ran a master studio. Later he also created models for KPM, Rosenthal and others - The bronze is based on a 1939 design by the artist for a seated beaver for KPM Berlin. The detailed and slightly rotated sculpture shows Esser's artistic skills as an animal sculptor. - Altogether somewhat dusty, occasionally lightly rubbed on the surface, some spots slightly oxidised. Overall very well preserved.

Zoologica Specifica - - Fritz Bernuth. Mantelpavian. Um 1927. Patinierte Bronze. H 58 x B 44 x T 52 cm. Müller, Fritz Bernuth. Verzeichnis der Skulpturen 1919-1973, 1974, S. WV 58. - Wohl eines von nur 3 Exemplaren. - Der Bildhauer Fritz Bernuth, welcher auch Entwürfe für verschiedene Porzellanmanufakturen fertigte, erlangte vor allem für seine Tierskulpturen Bekanntheit. In seiner Berliner Schaffenszeit betrieb er Studien im Beliner Zoo und war mit der Institution eng verbunden. Paviane zählen zu den von Bernuth ab 1926 am häufigsten dargestellten Tieren, wobei er sich intensiv mit Bewegung und Ausdruck dieser beschäftigte. - Leicht angestaubt, die Patina etw. ungleichmäßig und teils oxidiert. Unter den Standfüßen mit Spuren vorheriger Montierung, vereinzelt mit kl. Oberflächenschäden. Insgesamt gut erhalten, durch die schöne strukturierte Oberfläche in Verbindung mit der leichten Oxidation gelingt Bernuth eine naturnahe Darstellung. Baboon. Patinated bronze. - probably one of only 3 copies. - The sculptor Fritz Bernuth, who also produced designs for various porcelain manufactories, became known above all for his animal sculptures. Baboons are among the animals most frequently depicted by Bernuth from 1926 onwards, and he was intensively studying the movement and expression of the animals. - Slightly dusty, the patina somewhat uneven and partly corroded. Under the feet with traces of previous mounting, occasionally with small surface damages. Altogether well preserved, the pleasantly structured surface in connection with the slight oxidation gives a naturalistic depiction.

Früher Einblattdruck mit der Bewerbung der Wanderausstellung von mechanischen Geräten und Wachsmodellen. - Neben ausgestellten Wachsmodellen von Friedrich dem Großen, Kleopatraund der nachgestellten Enthauptung Johannes des Täufers bildete die Hauptattraktion eine vom Londoner Mechaniker O. Martinet aus Bronze, Silber und Edelsteinen gefertigte Uhr, den Siegeszug eines indischen Großmogul auf seinem Elefanten darstellend (Vgl. BnF cb314694779). - Papierbedingt zart gebräunt, vereinzelt mit blassbraunen Fleckchen, mit geglätteten Mittelfalzen und zwei kl. Fehlstellen im Blattrand. Insgesamt trotz des zarten Papiers äußerst wohlerhalten. Circus - Variety - Touring Museum - Early broadsheet advertising the traveling exhibition of mechanical objects and wax models. - In addition to exhibited wax models of Frederick the Great, Cleopatra, and the replica beheading of John the Baptist a.o., the main attraction was a clock made of bronze, silver and precious stones by the London mechanic O. Martinet, depicting the triumphal procession of an Indian Mughal Emperor on his elephant (cf. BnF cb314694779). - Slightly browned due to the paper, occasionally with pale brown stains, with smoothed center folds and two small cutouts in the sheet margin. Altogether in very well preserved condition despite the delicate paper.

With 12 original lithographs by Fantin-Latour as well as 21 vignettes by G. S. de Foncesca, further with additional 44 lithographs of the extra suite. Splendid edition with the delicately erotic illustrations by Henri Fantin-Latour. 1 of 150 numbered copies on "papier vélin du Marais", with two extra suites in black on thin Japan and Bistre on China. "Rare ouvrage coté, illustré par ce grand artiste" (Mahé 84). Remarkable is the publisher's cover by Charles Meunier, one of the great master bookbinders of French Art Nouveau: cover with embedded bronze plaque representing the reduced model for a monument to the "Muse de Chénier", which was to be erected by the sculptor Denis Puech.

In der unteren rechten Ecke signiert mit "Jos Pallenberg". M. Bartelmus und S. Schweizer, Der Tierbilderhauer Josef Pallenberg (1882-1946), Berlin, Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2020. - Josef Pallenberg war ein deutscher Tierbildhauer und Tierverhaltensforscher. Er wurde in Köln geboren und stammte aus einer Künstlerfamilie, die mit dem preußischen Königshof verbunden war. Seine formale Ausbildung erhielt er an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, wo er Zeichnung und Bildhauerei studierte. Pallenberg schuf unter anderem Tierbronzen für den Zoologischen Garten Berlin - den ältesten noch erhaltenen Zoo Deutschlands. - Wenige Stellen oberflächlich minimal berieben, insgesamt in sehr gutem Zustand. Striding rhinoceros. Bronze relief. Signed in the lower right corner with "Jos Pallenberg". - Few spots superficially minimally rubbed, overall in very good condition.

Samuel Tonkiss (British 1909-1992) "L.S. Lowry" Titled and dated 1979 on original label inside the sculpture, with foundry mark, numbered 1/12 on the label, bronze on a wooden base.* Samuel Tonkiss was born in Shropshire and moved to Todmorden in West Yorkshire, where he worked as a journalist. In 1959 he began to sculpt a series of portrait busts, some of which were cast in small editions. Lowry was captured twice by the artist in bronze in 1971 and 1975.
