DAVID BACKHOUSE F.R.B.S. (1941- ), Bronze study with nude girl seated on a high stool, inscribed "Backhouse `75, 4/6", 14" high David Backhouse sculptor and designer lives near Bath and also has a studio in Brantome, France. His early career was spent working and travelling in Europe where he was particularly involved with portrait commissions. He has made many public sculptures notably Cloaked Horseman for Bristol City Centre, Centaurs for Whiteleys London W2, The Stream of Life for Central Square Telford and Dolphin Family for London Docklands. He says of his work "The themes are simple and universal: the interdependence of nature and humanity, the search for balance and harmony. My sculptures are meditations on the human and animal condition in the modern world, reflecting loss and tragedy, hope and delight, and above all tenacity of spirit".

GIUSEPPE RENDA (Italian 1859-1939), "Il Generale", a bronze figure of a boy dressed as a General wearing a greatcoat with a medal and holding a stick, c.1910, signed in the bronze G. Renda, with the Art Laguna-Napoli Foundry mark, rich brown patination, raised on later white marble oblong base, 18 1/2" high (Illustrated) Renda was born in Polistena, Italy. The majority of his long and prolific career was spent in Naples where his style developed with that of the Italian Art Nouveau known as Liberty. This figure is a fine example of Renda`s interpretations of expressive Neopolitan street urchins, nicknamed "Scugnizzo"
