An early 19th Century bronze table oil lamp probably by Hancock & Rickson, the urn shaped reservoir with a shaped dummy spout supported by a figure of a mythical beast with bold floral and leaf capped body, leaf scroll column and bold leaf scroll circular base, and with conforming patent burner, 16ins high (circa 1830 - apparently unmarked)
Dimietre Chiparus (1888-1950 - Rumanian) - Good enamelled, gilt bronze and carved ivory figure - "The Chained Dancer" - The figure with arms out-stretched wearing an Art Deco style dress and headpiece, on veined onyx tapered base, 12.25ins high (signed "Chiparus" to base - lacking chain to hands, ivory cracked to left knee and shin, and rear of right leg)
An exceptional Sobei Kinkozan vase, c.1890, of square section, shouldered ovoid form, finely enamelled and gilt with silver-dotted panels of a festival cart painted with a tiger, a samurai in court costume, a hanging basket with a puppy eyeing a butterfly and a bijin by a rivulet on a mirror black ground, the shoulders with clouds on cafe-au-lait, black Kinkozan sei zo, minute glaze chip to one shoulder, 25cm. Everything about this vase sets it apart from Kinkozan`s normal oeuvre: the shape (derived from a Chinese Ming bronze) the black and brown grounds, the use of silver (now tarnished but revivable) the subject matter, the amount of space accorded the decoration, the nonchalant signature and lack of impressed mark, all these point to a special commission. The tiger is a zodiac animal and, on the twelve-year cycle, came round in 1890, a perfect fit stylistically for this vase. A vase of similar form and also with hanging baskets probably by the same hand is illustrated in Meiji Ceramics, Gisela Jahn, n.d., pl 91. For a similar puppy see Satsuma, Louis Lawrence, 1991, p. 174, and the hanging basket

Included in this lot is a newspaper cutting in which Admiral Sir William Fisher wrote: ‘Anyone who has known Rory Macdonald, however slightly, will have felt a bitter pang to hear of his premature end on service in the Fleet Air Arm. But those, like myself, who had been in the same ship with him (and he was my flag lieutenant for a period) know that the Navy has suffered a really grievous loss. In all sincerity I believe that we officers and men of H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth that in him we had the most exceptional young officer of his time. Personally I have never known a better. Added to a most attractive appearance and manner, he had all the solid qualities of character that are most admired in our Service. Humour, gaiety, vivid and radiant there was, continually breaking through a strict sense of duty, while a quiet manner of authority yet sympathy - very rare in an officer of his age - evoke little short of devotion in the men under him. He was outstanding in all forms of sport, but chiefly as a long distance runner. It is very hard to lose Rory Macdonald. ....’ On a Memorial to Major Donald Ramsay Macdonald, D.S.O., M.C., R.F.A., and his two sons, the inscription for Lieutenant Roderick William Macdonald, Royal Navy, reads - ‘who was missing from H.M.S. Courageous west of Alexandria on 15th February 1937, aged 24’.
