A bronze figure of the first KarmapaTibet, 16th century Noteworthy bronze sculpture depicting Dusum Kyenpa (1110-1193), first Karmapa and origin of the Karma Kagyu lineage in the Kagyupa school, founded during the XI century by the masters Marpa Milarepa and Gampopa. The figure is sitting in the padmasana position, on a double lotus flower base with big petals. The right hand performs the bhumisparsamudra, while the left one performs the avakasamudra. The figure wears an headdress characteristic of his lineage, and a rich monastic robe supplemented by a cape with peculiar ribbing on the back. On the robes are silver and copper appliqué reinforcing the edges, chiseled with phytomorphic motifs. A papier maché box and cover Iran, late 17th - 18th century Ink and natural pigments highlighted with goldExquisite rectangular box with rounded top and corner feet. The surface is richly ornate with high-relief crème colored lobed cartouches, on a background painted with flowers, birds and animals on a bronze colored iridescent base. The bigger cartouches are miniated with scenes in Safavide style, depicting rural scenes with couples drinking wine or the game of polo. The smaller cartouches are instead decorated with animals and flowers.
