Fine French ormolu and bronze mystery timepiece, the 4" circular clear glass dial fitted with a hand modelled as a mythical beast within a foliate ormolu bezel held aloft by a kneeling angel upon a tapering fluted column supported upon a stepped square base cast with an egg and dart frieze, 15.5" high

A fine Austrian gilt bronze mounted mahogany bracket clock, the engraved and gilt brass break-arched dial with silvered Dutch style chapter ring, strapwork centre with false pendulum, date apertures and cherub spandrels with coloured paste jewels, the arch with twin subsidiary mother of pearl STRIKE/NOT STRIKE and CHIME/NOT CHIME dials flanking a Meissen plaque painted with a watteauesque scene, the three train chiming movement with verge escapement and bob pendulum, hour bell and carillon of eight bells, engraved barrel and rectangular backplate, the case with arched front, back and sides, caryatids to the angles, richly mounted with chiselled swags and rocaille, the ogee domed top with silvered portrait medallion of Louis XVI, a similar medallion of Queen Charlotte to the back and surmounted by the silvered figure of the seated Putto, the apron mounted with a crown, on outset scrolling acanthus feet, 81cm h, c1780, the later plaque on the back door of the clock engraved PRESENTED BY QUEEN CHARLOTTE TO LOUIS XVI. Although unsigned, the royal emblems in the decoration of the clock, and its descent through a family in the direct line of the Kings of France (until the 1972 sale) support the royal provenance. Provenance: The Property of a Lady, Christie Manson & Woods, London, 8 November 1972, lot 74, 900gns to the present vendor. ++In fine condition, regularly cleaned and maintained with several repairers labels, the earliest being that of W F Weeden, Montpelier St, Brompton SW. The back of the case rather dry and somewhat faded.
