AN ARABIC-INSCRIBED BRONZE TRIPOD CENSER, 17TH CENTURYChina. Of compressed globular form, supported on three waisted feet and rising to a waisted neck with galleried and incurved rim, the sides cast with three shaped cartouches enclosing Arabic inscriptions against a ring-punched ground. The rim and neck are decorated with raised line bands.Inscriptions: Two cartouches with the Shahada al Tawhid. 'There is no deity but God. Muhammad is the messenger of God.' Written in Persian style.Provenance: Collection of Georg von der Gabelentz and thence by descent. Hans Georg Conon von der Gabelentz (1840-1893) was a German linguist and sinologist. His Chinesische Grammatik (1881), according to one critic, “remains until today the finest overall grammatical survey of the Classical Chinese language.” His father was the more renowned minister and linguist Hans Conon von der Gabelentz, an authority of the Manchu language. Poschwitz Castle in Altenburg, present-day Thuringia, built in the 13th century, was the home of the Gabelentz family for many centuries. Born in Erfurt, Karl Adolf Florenz was the founder of German Japanese studies and a translator of important Japanese classics. He became known for his work on Japanese history of literature. In 1889 he became a lecturer in German language and literature at the Imperial University of Tokyo, and in 1891 a full professor of German literature and comparative linguistics. In 1899, he became the first foreigner to be awarded the highest Japanese scholarly degree (Bungaku-Hakushi) for his translation of the Nihon shoki.

The earliest reference in the Zhongguo meishujia renming cidian ('Dictionary of Chinese Artists') comes from the Luochuang xiaodu and is presumably from the same source as published in Zhongguo yishujia zhenglue ('Brief Introduction of Chinese Artists'). Shisou is listed there only as a late Ming dynasty monk without any further biographical information. A number of vessels and sculptures from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century bear his name, sometimes in combination with a hall name, Jinyu tang ('Hall of Prosperity'). Cast as the four-armed Durga in a striding pose on a throne, slaying the buffalo demon with her trident held in her principal right hand, holding a javelin and chakra in her other hands, her lion mount besides her biting the buffalo. Provenance: Formerly in the Collection of the Krook Family. Sten Krook (1920-2009) and his mother Xenia Krook (1892-1988) shared a common interest in travelling and collecting Asian bronze figures. The second a Russian silver and niello bottle of pear shape, rising from a flat foot, decorated with floral scroll, a blank shield and the word 'КАВКАЗЪ', which translates to 'Caucasus', with a screw-on stopper and a chain issuing from both sides and ending in a clip for suspension, the backside of the last with two indiscernible hallmarks. Moore is a famed California collector of Chinese and Korean art, whose passion began in the 1950s when he served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. In 1942 he founded AB Nils Nessim in 1942, he expanded and in the 1960's he founded Nils Nessim International and Nils Nessims Antiques. Nils was early schooled in the carpet business by his father and went on many business trips to acquire carpets and goods for the stores. He travelled the world and built up an impressive collection of Antiques and Asian Works of Art alongside the carpet business. The garment of the goddess is beautifully decorated with linear patterns from legs to its shoulders. Also diamond patterns can be seen around the chest area.
