Pair of Chinese vases, late 19th century.Enamelled porcelain and bronze.Stamps on the base.Measurements: 60 x 24 x 24 cm.Pair of Chinese vases with cylindrical tank, gently curved towards the foot and shoulders, with neck opening towards the mouth. Richly decorated with warriors in sumptuous attire and divinities interacting in animated scenes. The Immortals are set in landscape settings with peaked mountains rendered in beautiful blue tones. The palette is rich in contrasts: reds, pinks, whites, browns, ceruleans? The enamel painting is combined with bronze friezes worked in relief and serpentine dragons around the shoulders. The landscapes are dominated by the presence of trees with large canopies, a symbol widely used in Chinese art because of its symbolic character, related to longevity. The eroded rocks represent the passage of time.
Shiva Lingam oil lamp; Nepal, 18th century.Bronze.Measurements: 12 x 15 x 10 cm.The lower ring represents the Yoni, the vagina that symbolises Parvati, while the Lingam or penis is a symbolic representation of her consort, the god Shiva. This type of lamp should be lit especially on Mondays, the favourite day of Shiva, who represents the fire that never ceases. The cobras adorning the lamp represent desire and the danger of succumbing to it, and allude to the mythical story that Shiva mastered the effect of the poison of temptation by keeping it in his throat, preventing it from reaching both body and mind. The representation of the Lingam and the Yoni together symbolises the duality of immanent reality and transcendent potency, the transcendental source of all that exists. The piece has a yellow patina, due to the fact that it has been smeared with turmeric, a plant considered sacred, whose rhizome represents the goddess.
Large vessel; China, between the Ming and Qing dynasties, 17th-18th century.Bronze.Measurements: 46 cm in diameter.Interesting piece dated between the end of the Ming dynasty and the beginning of the Qing dynasty, a large bronze vessel framed within the Feng Shuei, essential in every Chinese house. It must contain the five elements: metal (the vessel itself), water (inside), stone (some pebbles), wood (usually driftwood) and fire, the latter being the most important, represented by the fish. It is best to have between eight and nine orange and one black, the latter being the one that absorbs negative energy. It also has a representation of the infinite knot, which symbolises Buddha's wish for longevity and love.
Indian school of the 19th century."Shiva Nataraja".Patinated bronze.Measurements: 22,5 x 16 x 7 cm.Patinated bronze representation of Shiva Nataraja. One of the invocations of the Hindu god Shiva is as "lord of the dance" or Nataraja. He performs a cosmic dance within a circle of flames. It is a dance that is both destructive and constructive, regenerative. According to legend, some enemies wished to destroy Shiva. They sent a dwarf (considered by Hindus as demonic beings or the incarnation of evil) called "the devil of oblivion". To combat him, Shiva began his cosmic dance, subjugating the demon and freeing the world. The dance takes place in the centre of the universe and in the human heart. The figure dances half-naked, carrying a ball of fire or fire of enlightenment in his hand. Shiva's dance is composed of the ever-flowing combination of his five activities. The power of revealing brings knowledge and liberates the spirit. It is represented by the left foot raised and the left hand down like an elephant's trunk. It is the most common way of representing Shiva in South India, and is the most famous deity of the Chidambaram temple.
