A Greek bronze situla circa 4th century BC with a circular foot and tapering cylindrical body having a frieze band of stamped tongues and an over hanging flat rim, the pair of handles hooked into loops with a central palmette to either side, with a later copper sleeve connecting the foot to the part fragmentary body, 30.5cm high with handles up. The panel is formed from two boards in vertical alignment, there are paper reinforcements at the top and bottom. Movement in the central join at the top and bottom with cracks in the paint layer. There are vertical lines of cracks and slightly raised paint following the grain of the wood, mainly along the central join. The paint layer is in a stable condition overall. There is a thick, yellowed and degraded varnish layer which has started to become opaque and in some areas is flaking off the painting. There appears to be areas of retouching although the extent is obscured by the varnish. Old losses to the frame and the gilding has been painted with bronze paint.
