Lot 34
A George I bronze 7lb wool weight, c.1720, of shield shape, cast in relief with the Royal Arms, 16cm high, 10.5cm wide. Wool weights are first recorded in the reign of Edward IV and were to check the accuracy of the `Trowe`, a beam used to weigh wool for tax purposes. Being a flat shape meant they could easily be carried by horse. Wool was weighed in Tod`s, being 28lbs, thus a quarter Tod is 7lbs, weights can sometimes be found in half Tods and, extremely rarely, full Tods. Very few survive, as once worn, they should have been returned to Founders Hall in London to be replaced.
