This model depicts a specific moment in the life of the founder of Buddhism, when he reached enlightenment during protracted meditation under the Bodhi tree. The figure's hands are arranged in the mida no join mudra, a Japanese variation of dhyana mudra in which the index fingers are brought together with the thumbs.

PLEASE NOTE THIS LOT IS TO BE OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE. This plaque was created to commemorate the wedding of the artist's daughter Chieko to television director Norihiko Suemori in 1972. Yasutake Funakoshi joined the sculpture division of the Shin Seisaku Kyokai (New Art Society) in 1939, and later became a professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and Tama Art University. During his career, he was awarded many prizes and distinctions, and his work can be seen today in the collection of the Japanese Government, on the Heimai Bridge in Kushiro and on the shore of Lake Tazawa.

†&nbspA large and rare Chinese 'Imperial tribute' Canton enamel tripod censer, mark of Qianlong and of the period, of globular form supported on three cylindrical feet, chased on the exterior against the mille fleur ground with gilt bronze scroll, the central panel on one side finely painted with European figures traversing a hilly landscape bearing gifts accompanied by trumpet players and animals, the other side decorated with a lady holding a monkey and accompanied by a gentleman and attendant, flanked with two stylised chilong handles, the base inscribed in blue enamel with a six-character da qing qian long nian zhi mark on white ground, 45.5cm high x 50cm wide, with Japanese iron lid, total weight 5963 gramsAs a great example of the spread of Western influences to the East, this canton enamel censer is unusual in its size and chased scroll decoration in Baroque style. Compare with a similarly enamelled baluster vase at the Palace Museum, Beijing (accession number 故00116624). The lavish colouration and meticulous floral scroll on this censer are characteristic of painted enamel wares made by Guangzhou artists employed to produce tribute items for the Qing court. Since the technique of enamelling on metal was introduced by Jesuit missionaries residing in Guangzhou around 1684, the craftsmen of Guangzhou proved so proficient in the new craft that by 1716 the Kangxi Emperor is known to have summoned two artisans from there to work in the enamel workshop of the Imperial Household Department in the Palace. A Chinese bronze stele of Amitabha Buddha, Northern Wei Dynasty, finely cast in the form of Amitabha seated in padmasana with hands depicted in dhyanamudra, the Buddha of Infinite Light raised on a quadrangular base against a petal-shaped mandorla, tight and precisely etched with lines radiating from the outlines of the Buddha, reminiscent of light emitted by the deity, inscribed on the base with auspicious lines, 11.5cm highProvenance: Collected by the current owner on the UK market in the 1980's or early 1990's Buddhism flourished in China under the direct sponsorship of the Tuoba royal family, who founded the Northern Wei dynasty. They actively embraced Buddhism, funding the creation of Buddhist statues and temple grottoes as a means of establishing their claim to the Chinese throne. This bronze stele shares stylistic similarities with other examples of the Northern Wei period with inscriptions. The robes of the Buddhas and the flames of the mandorlas on these steles are similarly indicated by close parallel grooves.
