A gilt bronze and malachite ink set, 19th century, with a figure of an officer in uniform proffering a drink from his flask, a Napoleonic standard thrown down at his feet, flanked on either side by barrels containing ink wells, surmounted on a malachite base, length: 17.75., 7in The figure of the officer resembles the poet and Napoleonic War hero Denis Vasilievich Davidov, distinguished many times for his bravery. He was known as a political satirist and his works, such as Dream, occasionally caused controversy but he distinguished himself as aide-de-camp to Bagration in 1807. He was close to the Decembrists but did not take part in their rebellion.
