OF BATTLE OF ARNHEM AND AUTOGRAPHICAL INTEREST: THE CIGARETTE CASE OF MAJOR GENERAL ROY URQUHART CB DSO & BAR, a polished wood cigarette case of plain form, signed to the interior in ink by Urquhart, 17 x 9cm. Provenance: In 1945 Major General Urquhart came to the drill hall in Gipping Street, Ipswich to carry out the annual inspection. After the inspection Captain Smith, the commanding officer of the drill hall asked Urquhart for some small momento of his visit and Urquhart pulled his cigarette case from his pocket, signed it and gave it to the Captain. On the Captain's death, it passed to his son who gave it to the present vendor who was his business partner. Urquhart's famously commanded the 1st Airborne Division at the Battle of Arnhem and was awarded the Dutch Bronze Lion for his part in the battle.
