An archaistic cast gilt-bronze figurine of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara standing on a gussetted dais on a trapezoidal base; the Bodhisattva is shown with carefully modelled bands, the left hand holding a phial and the right raise. Property of a London Gentleman; acquired before 1975. Avalokiteshvara is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion who put off entering Nirvana for the sake of helping all living creatures gain enlightenment. He is also known as Chenrezig, or in the female form of Kwan Yin. He is the most popular Buddhist deity after the Buddha himself and the Dalai Lama is considered to be the earthly manifestation of him. The vase that Avalokiteshvara holds contains the water of compassion which has the quality of removing suffering, purifying the defilements of the body, speech and mind, and lengthening life. 1.1 kg, 25 cm (9 3/4"). Fine condition.

19th-20th century AD. A bronze plaque with stamped symbol of the vajra; used to close the underside of a hollow statue of the Buddha. Acquired on the London art market prior to 1980. The Vajra is associated with both Hinduism, where it is the weapon of Indra, and Buddhism, where it represents the indestructibility of the Buddhas teachings. A paired Vajra symbolizes the union of opposites and supreme truth. This plate is to go onto the underside of an image of the Buddha seated on the lotus throne. It would seal the image which would be filled with various precious objects. 15 grams, 88mm (3 1/2"). Fine condition.
