HENRY PICKERING (active c.1740-d.1771)Portrait of a Gentleman, standing three-quarter length, in a study, wearing an olive green coat , a long high necked waistcoat with silk embroidered buttons, and a lace jabotsigned and dated 'H. Pickering 1756' (lower left)oil on canvas, unframed50 x 40 in (127.1 x 101.6cm)A frontispiece portrait engraving from a book is visible behind the sitter, and is perhaps from a volume on The History of Medicine, published in Amsterdam in 1708. That suggests that the sitter may have been a member of the medical profession, who had studied in the Low CountriesPickering's earliest known portrait is dateable to 1740. His typical style of painting is a stiffer rendering from that of Thomas Hudson. Vertue states that in 1745 Pickering returned from a trip to Italy and that he on occasion worked with Joseph Van Aken the drapery painter. He was working in London circa 1746, but also appears to have had a good following in the North Midlands. He appears to have moved about between Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales, all of which districts provided him with sitters. In 1759 he was living in Manchester, possibly in Deansgate and appears to have been there at his death. His will (dated 1759) requested that his pictures 'may be finish'd by the Best Drapery Painter and then delivered to the Gentrey (sic) who have favoured me with their commands...'
