Elsie Ward(American, 1871-1923)"Black and Gold"; portrait of a 'bright young thing' with silk headscarf,signed,oil on canvas,titled to partial artist's label verso,35 x 31cms, in frame.Notes:Elsie Ward, also known as Elsie Ward Hering, was an American sculptor, who also worked with a diverse range of media - specialising in the depiction of portraits and busts. Provenance: Artist's label bears the name of 'Davenport Park, Stockport'.
A Bible in English, containing the Old and New Testaments together with the Apocrypha, folio, sheep, illus. with engraving, published by Nicholas Boden, Birmingham, 1771 ; the inside front cover, and prelimiary pages inscribed with family genealogical listings; sold together with a painted miniature portrait and 19th-century carte de visite, and ambrotype family portrait photographs.
19th Century British SchoolPortrait of John Croall, coachmaker to Queen Victoria,indistinctly signed,oil on canvas,75 x 62cms, in frame.Notes: John Croall & Sons were based at Castle Terrace in Edinburgh, and were established in 1850 as a firm of carriage hirers and undertakers, who later expanded their business to include coaches, cabs, and coachbuilding. Their most prominent client was Queen Victoria, form whom they built coaches during her rein.
JOHN KEPPIE RSA FRIBA JP (SCOTTISH 1862 - 1945), CAIRO watercolour on paper, signed and dated 1910mounted, framed and under glassimage size 50cm x 32cm, overall size 68cm x 50cmNote: Born in Glasgow, studied at Glasgow University and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris; partner of the firm of Honeyman and Keppie. A design by one of his junior staff, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, famously won the contract to build the Glasgow School of Art. Among the many buildings designed by him (Keppie) are those of the Glasgow Herald Mitchell Street buildings and those of the Daily Record. His watercolours are particularly effective and show the influence of Arthur Melville and Keppie was a prolific exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy. Maurice Greiffenhagen's celebrated portrait of John Keppie was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building of Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. Keppie's watercolours rarely appear at auction but in The Scottish Pictures auction of 24th September 2021 lot 2029 "Mosque, Kait Bey, Cairo" (a 50 x 33cm watercolour by Keppie) sold for £2200 (hammer).Condition is good overall.
Edith Martineau (1842-1909), a portrait of the artist's sister 'Isabella', watercolour, signed and dated 1879, 18" x 14" (46 x 36cm), from an old inscription on the reverse probably painted in the garden of the artist's and sitter's brother Basil's house, 3 Eldon Road (now Grove), Hampstead, note: the subject of this portrait is Kate Middleton's great, great, great Grandmother's cousin.
Edward Sylvester Hynes (1897-1982) Irish, Home Guard, a man in uniform, pen and watercolour, signed, 10.5" x 9", (26.5x23cm) along with another, 9.25" x 7.25", (23.5x18cm) and a lady in a bikini drying her hair with a towel with a man in the water, 15" x 6", (38x15cm) along with another of a portrait of a nude woman with a parrot on her shoulder, 10.5" x 8.5", (27x21.5cm), both pen and ink, signed and inscribed in pencil, (all unframed) (4).
AFTER FRANCIS JOHN WILLIAMSON (BRITISH, 1833-1920) A PORTRAIT OF PRINCESS ALICE OF ALBANY Carved and cast marble, one canted corner inscribed 'F. J. WILLIAMSON, SC., ESHER, 1884' Approximately 63cm high, 72cm wide, 42cm deep overall Princess Alice was born on 25 February 1883 at Windsor Castle to Prince Leopold and Princess Helen, the Duke and Duchess of Albany. Her father was the youngest son of Queen Victoria and Albert, Prince Consort. Her younger brother, Prince Charles Edward, would later become the last sovereign Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha upon the death of his great uncle.Princess Alice married her second cousin once-removed, Prince Alexander of Teck, the brother of Queen Mary, who was granted the Earldom of Athlone upon the Royal Family's relinquishing of German titles in 1917.Following the Earl's retirement from military service after the First World War, the couple's London residence was the grace and favour apartments, in Clock House at Kensington Palace; in 1923, they also acquired a country house, Brantridge Park. In her lifetime, Princess Alice carried out many engagements and took part in many of the activities the royal family were involved in. Apart from her normal duties as vicereine of South Africa and then Canada, she attended the coronations of four British monarchs: Edward VII, George V, George VI, and Elizabeth II, as well as the investiture of the Dutch queen Juliana. At her death in 1981, she was the longest-lived British princess of royal blood having lived through six reigns. Signed to the bottom corner with initials. Reverse with inked details. 51 x 35cms approx. Vasilchenko was born in 1916, studied in the Workers Art Studios. Family Medal Groups to the Adshead Family Covering Service in the Royal Navy During the First and Second World Wars, Father - 1914-15 Star medal, British War and Victory medals, “GNR A.E. ADSHEAD R.N.”, group mounted as worn with matching set of mounted miniature medals. Son- 1939 Star medal, Atlantic Star medal, Africa Star medal with clasp ‘North Africa 1942-43’, Burma Star medal and War medal 1939-45, medals unnamed and mounted as worn with matching set of mounted miniature medals. Group attributed to George Edward Roland Adshead (JX. 136367). Also include in this lot is a large size portrait photograph of A.E. Adshead, in uniform and wearing his medals. George V Royal Navy officers sword which retains nearly all of the gilt finish to the fittings. Housed in its original leather and gilt brass mounted scabbard. Blade etched with details. Housed in oilskin cloth sword bag. Royal navy officers bicorn full dress cap housed in its japanned storage tin and leather officers belt with gilt metal buckle. Alfred Edward Adshead was born in Deptford, Kent on 4th October 1884 and he commenced his career in the Royal Navy on 26th April 1904 as a Boy 2nd class on H.M.S. Impregnable. On the outbreak of war in 1914 he was serving as a Petty Officer on H.M.S, Excellent. He was promoted to Acting Gunner on 11th February 1915 a rate that was confirmed on 8th February 1917, he appears to have spent most of the war on board H.M.S. Havelock. Post war he continued his Royal Naval Service with promotion to Commissioned Gunner on 11th February 1925. He died suddenly on board H.M.S. Cornwall whilst in Portsmouth Dockyard on 20th November 1933 and is buried in the Anns Hill Cemetery, Gosport.George Edward Roland Adshead was born in March 1916 and by 1939 had followed in his father’s footsteps and was serving in the Royal Navy, in the March 1945 Navy List he is shown as a Gunner (T) with seniority of 3rd March 1945. He died in Southsea, Hampshire on 11th December 1999.
WW2 German 1939 Iron Cross 1st Class Attributed to Leutnant Karl Heinz Dannhaner of Kampfgeschwader 55, fine example of an un-marked 1st class Iron Cross with the original pin and catch fixing to the reverse. Much of the original patina remains to the award. Complete with the original black leatherette case of issue with outline of the award to the lid. Housed inside the case is a piece of medal ribbon for the War Service Cross 2nd class. Also accompanying the medal is an original studio portrait photograph of Leutnant Dannhaner in Luftwaffe uniform wearing his awards. Also with the group is a letter written to an English collector from Dannhaner, inviting him to a reunion of the squadron in Germany.

CATERPILLAR CLUB BROOCH AWARDED TO F/SGT. THOMAS DOCHERTY WWII-PERIOD with red cabouchon set eyes, inscribed F.SGT. T.DOCHERTY, in original box, presented alongside the relevant certificate, also his Late Arrivals Club certificate ...to certify F/Sergy. T. Dochert of 38 Squadron Middle East, is hereby nominated a member of the Late Arrivals Club in as much as he, in Cyrenaica on 25th February 1942 when obliged to abandon his Aircraft, on the ground or in the Air, as a result of unfriendly action by the enemy. Succeeded..., also two of his Observer's and Air Gunner's Flying Log Books, himself qualified as Wireless Operator, and these extensively detailing his flights circa January 1940 through to December 1945, also two RAF handkerchiefs, six portrait photographs and five othersAdditional images of log books now available.The pin is unmarked, though this is often the case and they were invariably produced in gold.
