Ω English School (circa 1790), portrait of Thomas Clarkson, watercolour on ivory, 5.5cm x 4.2cm, oval, in an oval part gilt ebonised wooden frame; and eight copy portraits, including: Lady Hamilton as Nature after George Romney, St Fabiola after Jean-Jacques Henner, Jonathan Buttall (The Blue Boy) after Thomas Gainsborough, and Master Lambton (The Red Boy) after Thomas Lawrence, each in a rectangular resin frame simulating ivory piano keys, 14.5cm x 125cm overall (9) Provenance: From the collection of the late John Marsh, Lawnswood House, South Staffordshire. Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846) was an English abolitionist and a leading campaigner against the slave trade in the British Empire. He helped found The Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade (also known as the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade) and helped achieve passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which ended British trade in slaves.
