American Whaling History - a 19th century oak portrait bust, of Owen Chase (1797 - 1869), a New England whaler and former First Mate of the fateful Essex, incised to verso Owen Chase, Nantucket, Captain of the Winslow, turned base, probably salvaged maritime timber, 39cm high, c.1860Chase is probably most famous for his ghost written Final Voyage of the Essex, an account of a whaling ship sunk off South America on 20th November 1820 after having been rammed by a huge sperm whale, an incident used by Herman Melville as one of the inspirations for Moby Dick. Having graduated from First Mate he Captained the Winslow from late 1824, fishing the Japan and Pacific Grounds on various expeditions until 1830.The trauma of the sinking of the Essex and the subsequent elongated journey home, with its immense hardships and instances of cannibalism, is said to have haunted Chase his whole life. In his latter years he began hiding food in his attic and was institutionalised for a period prior to his death.
