ATTRIBUTED TO ADRIAEN HANNEMAN (c.1603-1671) PORTRAIT OF MARY, PRINCESS ROYAL AND PRINCESS OF ORANGE (1631-1660), AS DIANA Half length, wearing a gauzy gown and feathered hat, holding a bow and arrow, a quiver of arrows behind her, oil on canvas 79.5 x 62cm. * Hendrick Danckerts's engraving of a detail of this subject dates from 1646 when Princess Mary was fifteen (British Museum). The plate, one of his earliest subjects, must have been engraved in the Netherlands as Danckerts did not visit England until 1650. Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of Charles I and Henrietta Maria, married Prince William in London in 1641, when she was aged just nine and he fifteen. Witnesses reported her being in tears throughout the ceremony, unwilling to wed a young prince whom she barely knew at such an age. Mary died of smallpox on Christmas Eve, 1660, aged 29. The whereabouts of Hanneman's original are not known. ++ Lined; replaced stretchers; scattered retouching; carved and gessoed oak frame

FOLLOWER OF WILLEM WISSING (1656-1687) PORTRAIT OF A NOBLEWOMAN, POSSIBLY QUEEN ANNE WHEN PRINCESS OF DENMARK Seated three quarter length, wearing a pink and white dress, red mantle, holding a dog on her lap, before a swagged curtain, a landscape seen through a stone window beyond, oil on canvas 122.5 x 99.5cm. ++ Lined; retouching
ANDREW GEDDES, ARA (1783-1841) PORTRAIT OF MISS FRANCES COUTTS (d.1809) Seated, long half length, wearing a green dress and a russet coat, oil on canvas 74.5 x 61.5cm. * The sitter was the daughter of James Coutts, co-founder of the eponymous bank, and his wife, Polly (nee Peagrim). Reynolds painted Miss Coutts in 1771 (collection of Coutts Bank). In 1778, she married her cousin John Stuart, later 4th Baronet, of Allanbank (c.1752-1821). Playfair's Baronetage of 1811 praised the late Mrs Stuart for her `pious and exemplary life`. ++ Lined; some associated retouching
AFTER WILLIAM DOBSON (1611-1646) PORTRAIT OF JAMES GRAHAM, 1st MARQUESS OF MONTROSE (1612-1650) Half length, wearing armour, oil on canvas 74 x 61.5cm. * After the prime version, c.1643-1644, sold at Sothebys London, July 3rd 2013, lot 5 Provenance: Formerly by descent in the Graham family ++ Lined; some retouching; some stretcher bruises; a few small paint losses; needs a clean
CIRCLE OF SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE, PRA (1769-1830) PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG FAIR-HAIRED GIRL WITH RINGLETS Oil on canvas, mounted circular, period gilt frame Sight 37cm. * There is a similarity with Richard Westall's 1829 drawing (and 1830 oil painting) of Princess Victoria (Royal Collection Trust) ++ Lined; some associated retouching
CIRCLE OF MARCUS GHEERAERTS THE YOUNGER (c.1561-1636) PORTRAIT OF A LADY, FORMERLY IDENTIFIED AS QUEEN ELIZABETH 1, THOUGHT TO BE ELIZABETH `BESS` of HARDWICK, COUNTESS OF SHREWSBURY (c.1527-1608) Half length, wearing a black dress decorated with jewelled roundels, lace collar and cuffs and a triple rope of pearls, oil on canvas 96 x 73cm. * The traditional identification of the sitter is misleading but the suggestion of it being `Bess` of Hardwick is more plausible. Portraits of this distinguished sitter are scarce. Four marriages (to Robert Barlow, Sir William Cavendish, Sir William St Loe and George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury) raised Bess from humble birth into the aristocracy. Bess oversaw the building of Chatsworth and Hardwick Hall and, within the latter, a portrait of the Queen (commissioned by Bess) may still be seen. The format of this portrait is a deliberate companion piece and the globe attests to her loyalty to the monarch. The `ropes of great perle` were recorded in the inventory of Bess's jewels in 1593 and may be seen in another portrait of her at Hardwick. Provenance: (?) Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon; possibly by descent to his son, Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl of Clarendon (1638-1709), Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire; possibly by descent to his nephew, Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl of Rochester, later 4th Earl of Clarendon (1672-1753); possibly transferred to his son, Henry Hyde, 5th Baron Hyde and Viscount Cornbury (1710-1753), c.1749; by descent to his niece, Charlotte (d.1790), daughter of William Capel, 3rd Earl of Essex (1697-1743), who married Thomas Villiers (1709-1786), Ist Earl of Clarendon (2nd creation); thence by descent to a family member until sold, December 2010 Exhibited: Plymouth, City Museum and Art Gallery, Paintings in the Clarendon Collection, 1954, p.10, no.6; Plymouth, Buckland Abbey, on long loan until 2010 Literature: G. SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE, PRA (1769-1830) PORTRAIT OF ROBERT BURNETT JONES (c.1750-1817) Quarter length, wearing a dark coat and white stock, oil on canvas, in a period Carlo Maratta-style frame 74.5 x 62cm. Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter to R. S. A. Donnithorne; London, Christies, April 15th 1994, lot 113 (the sitter's great grand daughter, Aeddan Arundell, married Captain Arthur Bampton Donnithorne in 1874); Private collection, Seattle, USA; Private collection, England. The sitter was Attorney General of Barbados until 1798. His wife and four daughters were each painted or drawn by Lawrence. This recently discovered portrait is a variant of the prime version, probably datable to c.1810 (Garlick 446; Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Massachusetts, USA) ++ Lined; some retouching; some skinned or abraded areas
