Irma Stern. PORTRAIT OF MARIE-ELIZE. signed and dated 1954. gouache on paper. Provenance:. a gift from the artist, thence by decent. Note: The painting is accompanied by letters written by Irma Stern to the sitter. The portrait of Marie-Elize Siebritz is executed in Irma Stern’s unique expressionistic style capturing the sitter’s attractive, inquisitive expression. Irma Stern befriended Ms Siebritz and from a collection of personal correspondence written to Siebritz it is clear that Stern enjoyed Siebritz’ company. Ms Siebritz hailed from Paarl, a journalist with the Cape Times, was appointed to Reuter’s Parliamentary Staff in 1935 and later became their chief editor. Besides being an athlete and serving on several sports associations, she was also the first woman dirt track racer in South Africa. Ms Siebritz was the aunt of the current owner of the portrait and as executor of her estate, he inherited the gouache painting together with letters written by Irma Stern. The warm friendship which existed between the two pioneering friends comes to the fore from a passage in Stern’s letter dated November 19th, 1954: “My dear Siebritz, I have arrived safely and before I do a thing want to thank you for the nicest day of this trip – the day to the Mapocho’s (sic), such a lovely care free trip and so much fun and then to crown it all the most beautiful Photos.” The letter further discusses a work of Stern’s in which Ms Siebritz showed an interest and ends with “So keep well and forgive me not seeing you yesterday but I was like an owl so tired. love to you Irma Stern”. 62 by 50cm. Comments/Condition:. not laid down, minor abrasions, minor paint losses, otherwise good
1830: Alphonse de Lamartine portrait medallion from the library of Richard Robert Madden 5.5 by 5.25 in.Portrait medallion of Alphonse de Lamartine, the French poet and statesman, produced in 1830 by David d’Angers at the time that de Lamartine was received into L`Académie Française. A scarce medallion, other examples are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musée du Louvre. Notes verso confirm this piece as coming from the collection of Dr. Richard Robert Madden (1798-1886), a well known doctor and historian of the United Irishmen. Both Madden and de Lamartine were instrumental in the movement for the abolition of the slave trade in their respective countries during the mid 19th Century and this perhaps explains why Madden hung this medallion in his library.
