* A Dunlop Maxply racquet used by Virginia Wade, the racquet with Lew Hoad portrait photograph, with a Dunlop ownership label attached; together with another Dunlop Maxply racquet, the handle inscribed with the initials R H M E [R H M EDWARDS], with a Dunlop ownership label attached. These racquets were returned to Dunlop’s Waltham Abbey tennis racquet factory for repairs/re-stringing. Both the Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade and R.H.M. Edwards were contracted players with Dunlop.
An autographed display of Joe Louis Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World between 1937 and 1949, the b&w portrait photograph of Louis in boxing pose signed boldly in ink and inscribed “thanks”, mounted, framed & glazed, 36 by 31cm., 14 by 12in. Joe Louis still holds the record for holding the world heavyweight boxing title longer than any other fighter. He was champ for 10 years, 8 months and 8 days and relinquished the title only through retirement.
An autographed display of Sonny Liston Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World between 1962 and 1964, the b&w portrait photograph of Louis in boxing pose signed boldly in ink and inscribed “thanks”, mounted, framed & glazed, 36 by 31cm., 14 by 12in. Sonny Liston won the world title by knocking out Floyd Patterson 25th September 1962 in Chicago. Liston was one of the most powerful punchers and jabbers in history and would surely have dominated the heavyweight scene for many years had he not been boxing in the same era as the incomparable Muhammad Ali with whom he had no answers when they fought in Miami 25th February 1964.
A Lauda & Prost-signed McLaren limited edition print plus other driver-signed items, featuring an exploded workshop drawing of the MP4/2B car bearing the legend: Presented by the Directors of McLaren International to Phil Boore in recognition of his personal contribution towards winning the 1984 / 1985 World Championships, numbered 42/100 and signed by respective Champion Drivers Niki Lauda and Alain Prost, framed and polyurethane coated, 52 by 71cm., 20½ by 28in., a David Coulthard-signed print after Alan Stammers of his 1996 Canadian GP McLaren-Mercedes, an artist’s proof signed by the artist, unframed, 65 by 90cm., 25½ by 36in., a Keke Rosberg-signed print bearing a personal message, an early 1980s portrait featuring a Fittipaldi car after an unknown hand, framed and glazed, 53 by 42cm., 21 by 16½in., two monochrome photographs, one signed by Niki Lauda, the other a 1986 team photo by Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg, two colour 1999 Japanese and British GP winner’s photos signed by Mika Hakkinen, and David Coulthard, most 24 by 18cm., 9I½ by 7in. George Eyston-signed ‘Speed Kings of 1938’ brochure, the George Eyston portrait signed by him in ink and dated 1939, the Shell-BP twice-folded 3-colour printed promotional brochure also showing a similar portrait of John Cobb and details of their respective record breaking exploits during the year, foolscap size when folded: 33 by 19cm., 13 by 7½in., sold with a later newspaper cutting referring to Eyston’s Thunderbolt car in New Zealand (2). At Utah in the summer of 1938 Captain G.E.T. Eyston twice broke the World’s Land Speed Record. Initially he raised it to 345mph, some 34mph above the existing record, before increasing it to 357mph.

A late 18th Century first period Worcester tea bowl and stand with crescent back stamp S/D, together with a mid 19th Century tankard transfer printed with a portrait study of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to each side S/D 7.5cm high, a small Royal Worcester spill vase shape number 1049, 6cm high and a Continental patch box with gilt-painted metal mounts, S/D, 7cm wide. A 19th Century Bohemian bottle of tapered ovoid form with collar neck and flat rim set with a tulip form posy stopper, the whole decorated with oval opal glass pads hand enamelled with a male portrait, garden landscapes and floral sprays over a ruby and foliate scroll gilded ground, height 28 cm.

English School, mid 18th century Portrait of Samuel Hext, aged 50, his hair en queue, wearing a jabot and red jacket, inscribed "S Hext ATAT 50 1784", in feigned oval Oil on canvas, 61cm by 45cm Portrait of Marjorie Taylder, aged 53, wearing an elaborate ribbon tied lace headdress and similarly trimmed blue dress, inscribed "M Hext ATAT 53 1786", in feigned oval Both in gilt frames with shells at the angles Samuel Hext (b.1733, m. 1757 Majorie Taylder of Holland in Mabe, d. 4 September 1800). Marjorie Taylder (b. 30 March 1730, d. 25 October 1795 at Lostwithiel). One of the sons of Samuel and Majorie Hext was John Hext (b.15 Nov 1766) and who was presented with the silver hot water urn and the pair of neo-classical two-handled vases also included in this sale. John Hext is the great great great great grandfather of the present vendors.
Jacob Spornberg (1768-c.1840): Silhouette Portrait of Streemer Thomas, the father of Bishop Thomas of Winchester, and his wife, Mrs Streemer Thomas, in red on black, oval, 9cm, with inscriptions M Spornbergh Invenit Bath and W Spornberg Fecit Bath 1792, in original gilt embossed brass gadroon edged frames Jacob Spornberg is noted for "newly invented Etruscan profiles", executed on glass. Subjects were painted against a red background with a black surround on the underside of convex glass. He was Finnish by birth, having been born in Bjarna, the third son of Isak and Elizabeth Spornberg. After working in Stockholm he first came to England in 1785 and stayed in Bath. The Swedish Authorities only allowed him to stay a year, but in 1790 he returned to Bath and settled. He married at St Marylebone Church, London in 1795, a widow named Rebecca Baguley nee Hindmarsh who was about thirteen years older than her husband. In 1840, some time after his wife`s death, Spornberg emigrated to America, and it is thought that he died in Indiana.

A Victorian Rosewood and Brass Strengthened Jewellery Box, the lid with shepherd`s purse cartouche with inscription M (for Maria) M (for Martha) Bushby, with inner lift-out tray and Bramah lock, flush side handles, 35.5cm wide This box belonged to Maria Martha Bushby, whose portrait in miniature is part of lot 427.
