Early 18th century German school - Bust portrait of Ernest Louis, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, oil on canvas (re-lined), 63 x 48cmNote: Facially, this portrait bears a striking resemblance to one by Johann Christian Fiedler (1697-1765) in the Darmstadt Palace Museum. Ernest Louis (1667 – 1739) Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, Knight of the Order of the Elephant, Knight of the Order of the Brandenburg Red Eagle. Aiming to emulate the extravagant opulence of Louis XIV's French court, Ernest Louis's expenditure ran his country into debt. He was a great patron of the arts and supported the Baroque composer Christoph Graupner and the gambist Ernst Christian Hesse, as well as the architect Louis Remy de la Fosse who built the Orangerie in Darmstadt in 1717 and was commissioned to redesign the Residential Palace. Unfortunately, due to lack of funds, only the frontage and one wing was realised in 1720. Upon Ernest Louis's death in 1739, his country's debt was 4 million gulden, ten times the annual revenue.

Soon after Parliament rejected the second Charter petition (calling for the widening of suffrage, reduction of factory hours, political freedom, Home Rule in Ireland etc), strikes and riots broke out throughout the country. O'Connor and 58 others were arrested and charged with inciting the outbreak. John Cleave was a radical publisher, organiser, speaker, and provincial lecturer for the National Union of the Working Classes. He stood surety for Feargus O'Connor during his trial in 1842.
