[Victoria Cross / Medal / Autograph] A signed portrait photograph of Sapper Adam Archibald, VC, a Scottish First World War recipient of the Victoria Cross, 20 cm x 15 cm. [On 4 November 1918 near Ors, France, Sapper Archibald was with a party building a floating bridge across the canal. He was foremost in the work under a very heavy artillery barrage and machine-gun fire. The latter was directed at him from a few yards distance while he was working on the cork floats. Nevertheless he persevered in his task and his example and efforts were such that the bridge which was essential to the success of the operations was very quickly completed. [Victorian Cross / Medal] A period watercolour portrait of Major Richard Raymond Willis, VC, 1st Battalion the Lancashire Fusiliers, possibly a study for a book illustration or memorial, framed and mounted under glass, 20 cm x 15 cm, 46 cm x 36 cm overall [On 25 April 1915 west of Cape Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey, three companies and the Headquarters of the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, when landing on W Beach, were met by a very deadly fire from hidden machine-guns which caused a large number of casualties. The survivors, however, rushed up and cut the wire entanglements notwithstanding the terrific fire from the enemy and after overcoming supreme difficulties, the cliffs were gained and the position maintained. Willis was one of the six members of the regiment awarded the VC for this action]
[Victoria Cross / Medal] A Great War period portrait postcard of Private Wilfred Edwards, VC, 7th Battalion, The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, together with two studio portrait photographs of Edwards serving as an officer of the RAOC during the Second World War, also his VC medal ribbon bar and a medal ribbon. [16 August 1917 at Langemarck, Belgium, "When all the company officers were lost, Private Edwards, without hesitation and under heavy machine-gun and rifle fire from a strong concrete fort, dashed forward at great personal risk, bombed through the loopholes, surmounted the fort and waved to his company to advance. Three officers and 30 other ranks were taken prisoner by him in the fort. Later he did most valuable work as a runner and eventually guided most of the battalion out through very difficult ground. Throughout he set a splendid example and was utterly regardless of danger"]
[Victorian Cross / Medal] A period portrait postcard of Corporal A G Drake, VC, 8th Rifle Brigade, together with a period composite full length portrait of Drake standing in uniform, a period photograph of his grave, cuttings and later documents etc. ["For most conspicuous bravery on the night of 23rd Nov., 1915, near La Brique, France. He was one of a patrol of four which was reconnoitring towards the German lines. The patrol was discovered when close to the enemy who opened heavy fire with rifles and a machine gun, wounding the Officer and one man. The latter was carried back by the last remaining man. Corporal Drake remained with his Officer and was last seen kneeling beside him and bandaging his wounds regardless of the enemy's fire. Later a rescue party crawling near the German lines found the Officer and Corporal, the former unconscious but alive and bandaged, Corporal Drake beside him dead and riddled with bullets. He had given his own life and saved his Officer.]
[Victoria Cross / Medal / Autograph] An inscribed photographic portrait postcard of Vice Admiral Gordon Campbell, VC, DSO and two bars, framed under glass, 29 cm x 20 cm ["On 17 February 1917 in the north Atlantic, Commander Campbell, commanding HMS Farnborough (Q.5) (one of the "mystery" Q ships) sighted a torpedo track. He altered course and allowed the torpedo to hit Q.5 aft by the engine-room bulkhead. The 'Panic party' got away convincingly, followed by the U-boat. When the submarine had fully surfaced and was within 100 yards of Q.5-badly damaged and now lying very low in the water-the commander gave the order to fire. Almost all of the 45 shells fired hit the SM U-83 which sank. Q.5 was taken in tow just in time and was safely beached. On 22 March 1916, another U-boat, SM U-68 was sunk by Farnborough."]
[Victoria Cross / Medal] A studio portrait of Captain Charles Lumley, VC, 97th Regiment, by Elliott and Fry, 55 Baker Street, W. laid on embossed and printed mount and framed under glass, 29 cm x 24 cm overall. [On 8 September 1855 at Sebastopol, during the assault on the Redan, Captain Lumley was among the first inside the Russian defences, where he was immediately attacked by three Russian gunners who were reloading a field piece. He shot two of them with his revolver when he was knocked down by a stone which stunned him for a moment, but on recovery, he drew his sword and was in the act of cheering his men on, when he was severely wounded in the mouth.]
[Victoria Cross / Autograph] An autograph signature of James Owens, VC, 49th Regiment of Foot, cut from a letter and framed alongside a portrait and replica medals etc, together with a Victorian cabinet card depicting Owens with other Yeoman Warders. ["Greatly distinguished himself on the 30th October, 1854, in personal encounter with the Russians, and nobly assisted Major Conolly, Coldstream Guards." Owens was one of the first to be gazetted for the Victoria Cross, on 24th February 1857. He was presented his award by Queen Victoria in person at the first investiture in Hyde Park on 26th June 1857.]

[Victoria Cross / Medal] A period studio portrait photograph of Captain George Stewart Henderson, VC, DSO and Bar, MC, 2nd Battalion The Manchester Regiment, by Lafayette of London, tipped onto printed card and mounted with a period printed citation in ebonised frame under glass, 34 cm x 23 cm overall. ["The late Captain George Stuart Henderson, D.S.O., M.C:, 2nd Bn., Manchester Regt. For most conspicuous bravery and self sacrifice. On the evening of the 24th July, 1920, when about fifteen miles from Hillah (Mesopotamia), the Company under his command was ordered to retire. After proceeding about 500 yards a large party of Arabs suddenly opened fire from the flank, causing the Company to split up and waver. Regardless of all danger, Capt. Henderson at once reorganised the Company, led them gallantly to the attack and drove off the enemy. On two further occasions this officer led his men to charge the Arabs with the bayonet and forced them to retire. At one time, when the situation was extremely critical and the troops and transport were getting out of hand, Capt. Henderson, by sheer pluck and coolness,, steadied his command prevented the Company from being cut up and saved the situation. During the second charge he fell wounded, but refused to leave his command, and just as the Company reached the trench they were making for he was again wounded. Realising that he could do no more, he asked one of his N.C.O.'s to hold him up on the embankment, saying, "I'm, done now, don't let them beat you." He died fighting."]
[Victoria Cross / Medal] A portrait of Captain Noel Chavasse VC and Bar, MC, acrylic, late 20th Century, framed and mounted under glass, 57 cm x 57 cm ["During an attack he tended the wounded in the open all day, under heavy fire, frequently in view of the enemy. During the ensuing night he searched for wounded on the ground in front of the enemy's lines for four hours. Next day he took one stretcher-bearer to the advanced trenches, and under heavy shell fire carried an urgent case for 500 yards into safety, being wounded in the side by a shell splinter during the journey. The same night he took up a party of twenty volunteers, rescued three wounded men from a shell hole twenty-five yards from the enemy's trench, buried the bodies of two officers, and collected many identity discs, although fired on by bombs and machine guns. Altogether he saved the lives of some twenty badly wounded men, besides the ordinary cases which passed through his hands. His courage and self-sacrifice, were beyond praise"]

Attributed to Charles Grey (1808-1892)Three quarter length portrait of Charlotte Burnley (1781-1857), standing upright with hand resting on hip, wearing 1840s fashion, including a black silk pleated dress with pointed bodice, pink silk neck scarf, and lace cap, her hair worn in a centre-parting and adorned with fresh flowers, oil on canvas, in gilt frame, 80 x 63 cm (92 x 75 cm framed)Born in Greenock, Grey moved to Ireland when he was a young where he made a living as a portrait painter in Dublin. He was particularly popular amongst the Scottish communities living there. Lord Londonderry and Lord Powerscourt became his patrons and they entertained him in the Highlands. Grey exhibited in The Royal Hibernian Academy in 1837 alongside regularly showing at The Royal Scottish Academy. Towards the end of his career his subject matter was dominated with Scottish scenery.

Condition Report: Generally very good condition, with some of the images mounted and some laminated. Notable damage to the corner of one drawing, where the corner has torn away.
