LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY FRENCH GILT METAL AND HAND PAINTED PORCELAIN MOUNTED MANTLE CLOCK, the 3 ½" enamelled Roman dial, powered by a drum shaped movement, lacking bell, and housed in a fancy case with two handled urn pattern finial, set beneath an oval female portrait panel and above six floral panels, enclosing central panel painted with a cherub, 13 ½" (34.3cm) high, TOGETHER WITH AN ASSOCIATED MOULDED GILT WOOD PLINTH, (2)
LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MAHOGANY AND LINE INLAID LONGCASE CLOCK WITH ROLLING MOON PHASE, SIGNED E. SHEPLEY, MANCHESTER, the 14" painted dial with centre seconds and date hand, well painted with biblical scene entitled, 'Good Work Rewards Men' to the centre and saint portrait spandrels, set beneath the moon phase to the arch, powered by an eight day movement striking on a bell and housed in a case with swan neck pediment and free standing square, tapering columns to the fore corners, over a flame cut long trunk door with ripple arch top, and raised on a chamfered base with ogee bracket feet, the whole outlined in boxwood, 93 ½" (237.5cm) high
A MID 18TH CENTURY PINCH OF SNUFF BASKET HILTED BROAD SWORD, 90.5cm blade with elongated fullers to either side and decorated with panels of Celtic strapwork and stands of arms at the forte, characteristic hilt composed of flattened round bars forming four full panels of crosses with foliate vertical terminals, two further half panels and a vacant rein panel, flattened half bun-shaped pommel, wire bound fishskin grip with Turk's heads, scarlet velvet faced chamois liner. See British Basket-Hilted Swords by Cyril Mazansky pg 171-174. The term "Pinch of Snuff" derives from a series of mid 18th Century portraits of officer's carrying swords with similar hilts, one such portrait entitled "A Pinch of Snuff" by Delacour depicts Malcolm Macpherson of Phoness who fought with the 78th Regiment as a Volunteer.
