A MID 18TH CENTURY PINCH OF SNUFF BASKET HILTED BROAD SWORD, 90.5cm blade with elongated fullers to either side and decorated with panels of Celtic strapwork and stands of arms at the forte, characteristic hilt composed of flattened round bars forming four full panels of crosses with foliate vertical terminals, two further half panels and a vacant rein panel, flattened half bun-shaped pommel, wire bound fishskin grip with Turk's heads, scarlet velvet faced chamois liner. See British Basket-Hilted Swords by Cyril Mazansky pg 171-174. The term "Pinch of Snuff" derives from a series of mid 18th Century portraits of officer's carrying swords with similar hilts, one such portrait entitled "A Pinch of Snuff" by Delacour depicts Malcolm Macpherson of Phoness who fought with the 78th Regiment as a Volunteer.
