Crimean War Interest; Sir Garnet Wolseley ; photograph and autograph. Wolseley (1833-1913) was the commander of the British Forces sent to Egypt in 1882 and led the unsuccessful attempt to rescue General Gordon from Khartoum. He was commander in chief of the British Army at the end of the 19th century and as a young officer had served in the Crimea and fought in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Signature in ink, cut from a letter. Photograph a portrait issued as a cigarette card. Image 6x4cm, signature 8cm x 4cm. Laid to card. Rare signature.
Mark Wilfred Batten (1905-1993), A bronze portrait bust of John Hull Grundy, signed, titled and dated 1958, height, 48cm, 19in. * The bust is of the pioneering medical zoologist John Hull Grundy who himself trained in sculpture before going into medicine and was a contemporary of Batten's at Chelsea Art School. Artists' Resale Right ("droit de suite") may apply to this lot.

(1809-1896), Portrait of Jenny Lind (1820-1887), unsigned, attributed and titled on gilt nameplates, watercolour, 57 x 44cm, 22.5 x 17.25in. * Johanna Maria Lind, better known as Jenny Lind, was a Swedish opera singer, often known as the "Swedish Nightingale". One of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century, she performed in soprano roles in opera in Sweden and across Europe, and undertook an extraordinarily popular concert tour of America beginning in 1850. She was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music from 1840.
Pearlware Admiral Lord Nelson jug circa 1805, printed with a portrait titled 'England expects every man to do his duty' the reverse printed of flowers, 17.5cm high. Also a Dawson pearlware Jan van Speyk, 1805 - 1831 commemorative plate 22cm diameter. On the 5th February 1831 Jan van Speyk famously blew his own ship up by igniting the powder magazine rather than surrender the vessel to a Belgian raiding party during the Belgian Revolution.
