French school of ca. 1810."Portrait of a lady.Gouache on vellum.Size: 4,6 x 4 x 0,5 cm.Miniature of oval format representing a French lady of delicate features. The young lady has her hair combed with a high up-do that gives her elegance and subtlety. Miniature portraits developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. They consisted of small paintings that were embedded in objects such as medallions, table clocks or small boxes. The frame of these portraits was usually oval or circular. They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, pewter or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. This delicate art was gradually lost from the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.

Spanish school of the late 18th century."Portrait of a Cardinal.Gouache on vellum.Frame in bronze and stuccoed wood.Measurements: 7 x 5,5 cm; 14,5 x 13 x 1,5 cm (frame). In this miniature the author immortalises the half bust portrait of a cardinal. He wears a cardinal's cape and cassock, both in red, symbolising the cardinal's willingness to die for his faith. The delicate execution of the features and clothing indicate that this is the work of an avid painter who specialised in the genre of miniatures, which developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. These were mainly paintings that were embedded in objects such as medallions, table clocks or small boxes. They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, tin or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. This delicate art was gradually lost from the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.
Circle of "TODESCHINI"; GIACOMO FRANCESCO CIPPER (Feldkirch, 1664-Milan, after 1747), 17th century."Elderly mendicant".Oil on canvas.Relined.It presents damages in the margins. It presents repainting.Measurements: 57,5 x 45,5 cm.In this portrait of a mendicant old man we can observe the line of caravaggism, as it was adopted by Todeschini in the dignification of popular types. The present painter probably belongs to Todeschini's circle (Giacomo Francesco Cipper). The beggar, despite his toothless mouth and the misery of his rags, is not caricatured, but on the contrary, the brightness of his eyes and the tenderness with which he is depicted dignify him. The naturalism achieved in the tone of the flesh tones, the vivid expression and the contrasting plastic qualities are outstanding.Of Austrian origin, Cipper worked in Milan in the first half of the 18th century. A highly productive landscape painter in the Caravaggesque manner, his first attributed work is dated 1700; he worked in Lombardy and the Veneto (see, for example, his Hunters and Greengrocers in the Campori Gallery, Modena, and his Family of Peasants in Venice in the Accademia Galleries). Subsequently, the artist, perhaps under the influence of Giacomo Ceruti (some of whose works are attributed to him), moved away from the scrupulous observation of detail, replacing it with a less representational vision, more sensitive to the play of light. His last known work is Self-portrait (1736), now at Hampton Court Palace.

He also executed four monuments to military heroes for St Paul's Cathedral, London and left the Chantrey Bequest (or Fund) for the purchase of works of art for the nation. The first marble bust of the Duke of Wellington was carved for the Earl of Liverpool although Chantrey later went on to produce versions for both the sitter and the King amongst others Although this idealized portrait of Wellington executed after his victory at Wellington is carved in the classical mode (al'antica), with bared neck and blank eyes, the inclusion of the military hero's dramatic profile suggests the influence of the emerging romantic movement. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
