Titled and dated 1941Note: Edmond Xavier Kapp was born in London and was educated at Christ's College in Cambridge, in Paris and Rome. Kapp was a British portrait painter, draughtsman and caricaturist who during his career depicted many of the most famous politicians, artists and musicians of the time. He had several dozen one man shows in London and provincial galleries as well as on the continent, in Canada and America. There was a major retrospective exhibition of his work at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1961. Kapp's work is represented in many public and private collections including 26 pictures in The National Portrait Gallery, London.

STEVE MCCURRY (AMERICAN b. 1950), SHARBAT GULA, AFGHAN GIRL, PAKISTAN offset lithographic colour print, signed lower right in pen 54cm x 38cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Steve McCurry took his most recognized portrait, ''Afghan Girl'', in a refugee camp near Peshawar, Pakistan in 1984. The image itself was named as ''the most recognized photograph'' in the history of the National Geographic magazine and her face became famous as the cover photograph on the June 1985 issue. The photo has also been widely used on Amnesty International brochures, posters, and calendars. The identity of the ''Afghan Girl'' remained unknown for over 17 years until McCurry and a National Geographic team located the woman, Sharbat Gula, in 2002.
Attributed to George Weatherill (1810-1890) ''Public House at Sandsend'', inscribed, pencil and watercolour with scratching out, together with a further portrait of a young lady, head and shoulders, thought to be a sketch of one of the Weatherill daughters and drawn by one of the sisters, 13.5cm by 24.5cm and 7cm dia. (oval) respectively (2) Provenance: Reputedly ex. Smailes Collection Landscape work : In relatively poor condition. Significantly time stained paper and mount. Washed out colours. Portrait: Moderate time staining to the paper which is more pronounced towards the edges of the mount. There are three small brown coloured marks around the head of the girl. The most pronounced in colour is at her parting and there are two less pronounced at the top of her head and just above in the background. Seemingly a delicate palette by design There is horizontal scratching in the background area below her left hand side cheek which would appear to have been executed by the artist. Not examined out of the frames.
