Follower of Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger (Flemish 1561-1635), Portrait of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley (1520-98), quarter length in rich robes and jewels and holding a wand, oil on panel after 1572, 49cm x 36cm, inscribed to an old cataloguing label verso 'Gheeraerts portrait of Lord Burghley in rich dress holding a wand, on panel, 18 1/2 in by 13 3/4 in', also inscribed to an older label 'Dr Burrell's picture' in ink.NB: Compare this to a similar portrait in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG 604). William Cecil served both Edward VI and Mary Tudor but exercised most power as chief minister to Elizabeth I. When she ascended to the throne, Elizabeth's first appointment was to make Cecil her Principal Secretary of State, the youngest member of her council. Throughout her life he was her most influential minister, tempering her views with his cautious advice.
