19th Century. English School. A portrait of an unknown lady, three quarter length, in a black dress with lace collar and bonnet, seated against a balcony, a park landscape beyond. Early 19th century. Oil on canvas, gilt frame. (82 x 67 cm) Provenance: Manolo March collection from Son Galceran, Mallorca.
R J M DUPONT (British 1920 - 1977). Sailing on the Solent, 1938. Oil on canvas. 77cm x 70 cm Signed lower right. A three quarter length portrait of a gentleman at the helm of a yacht, seascape beyond. Title and date to rear on the frame. *Richard John Munro Dupont was a direct descendant of Dupont Gainsborough, nephew of Thomas Gainsborough. He was educated at Marlborough where he won the art prize on many occasions. It was in 1938 that he was accepted for the Art School at the RA but it was also the year his father died after he had begun his course. His study was interrupted by the Second World War when he became British Official War Artist South-East Asia command, the youngest in history. Encouraged in his final year by Sir Alfred Munnings, he became an important equestrian artist with important commissions and paintings in the Royal Collection. This appears to be a self portrait of a confident artist on the eve of his career.

Unter Passepartout montiert.ProvenienzNachlass Xanti Schawinsky; Privatsammlung, SchweizDas wie ein privater Schnappschuss anmutende Portrait von Walter Gropius entstand vermutlich auf der Terrasse der „Albergo Monte Verità“. 1926 hatte der Bankier und Kunstmäzen Eduard von der Heydt den legendären Berg mit seiner Künstlerkolonie in der Nähe von Ascona erworben und hier ein Hotel im Stil des Neuen Bauens mit Blick auf den Lago Maggiore bauen lassen. Der Ort war um 1930 zum mondänen Treffpunkt der Künstleravantgarde geworden. Walter Gropius, Josef Albers, Herbert Bayer, Marcel Breuer, Lionel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, Xanti Schawinsky und László Moholy-Nagy zählten zu den Gästen. Josef Albers, der sich mit der Schließung des Bauhauses seiner Existenzgrundlage beraubt sah, emigrierte 1933 zusammen mit seiner Frau Anni in die USA und fand, ebenso wie kurze Zeit später Xanti Schawinsky, eine Anstellung als Lehrer am Black Mountain College, das den fortschrittlichen Ideen des Bauhauses aufgeschlossen gegenüberstand. Walter Gropius, mit dem ihn eine enge Freundschaft verband, bemühte sich wiederholt - erfolglos - darum, Albers an die Graduate School of Design nach Harvard zu holten. JAMES WALKER (1748–1808) AFTER GEORGE ROMNEY (1734 – 1802) Portrait of Frances Woodley, Mrs Henry Bankes the Younger (1760-1823) Mezzotint on paper with margins Published as the Act directs Dec. 12th 1781 by I Walker No. 50 Charlotte Street, Portland Place 41 x 25 cm Miss Frances Woodley is the eldest daughter of William Woodley (1728- 1793) and Frances Payne (1738 - 1813). The portrait was painted, during the winter of 1780-81 according the artist’s sittings’ records, before Frances Woodley, ‘one of the most remarkable beauties of the day’, married Henry Bankes the younger (1757 - 1834) in 1784. In 1784-1802 and in 1805 Walker worked in St. Petersburg, creating an outstanding gallery of engraved portraits of the Russian aristocracy.

Edward VIII Coronation 1937: A Royal Crown Derby loving cup, the body with sepia portrait on pale blue ground within scrolling cartouche, coronet above and banner reading: Coronation, with gilt 1937 beneath, the reverse with ER monogram within cartouche, coronet and banner to match the front, gilt heightening to handles, band of gilt laurel decoration to inside and foot, the underside with red stamp.
