John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) - Charcoal drawing - Shoulder length portrait of Robert Gould Shaw III in uniform (thought to be The Blues and Royals), 22ins x 16.5ins, indistinctly signed along the top and dated 1923, in gilt moulded frame with cloth covered slip and glazed Provenance: Gift of lady Nancy Astor to Mr. Robert Shaw’s partner, Alfred Edward Goodey, following his suicide in 1970, and thence by descent, complete with typed letter from David Astor to the vendor’s family dated 13th July 1995 regarding a proposed private sale of the picture. Note: Robert Gould Shaw III (1898-1970) was the only son of Nancy Langhorne (later Lady Nancy Astor) and her first husband Robert Gould Shaw II, who was a cousin of Robert Gould Shaw of Civil War fame. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and briefly served in the Life Guards but his increasing alcoholism caused difficulties. He also had suicidal tendencies and his life mostly went adrift from an early point. In 1931 he was imprisoned for six months for his homosexuality. His alcoholism, the Profumo Affair, his mother’s death and the death of his half- brother, William Waldorf Astor, 3rd Viscount Astor, may have increased his suicidal tendencies and in 1970 he committed suicide.
