Four rare, early and historic cricket photographs removed from a Victorian scrap album,comprising a trio of 4 by 5in. photographs of the 1st, 3rd and 4th Australian cricket teams to tour England in 1878 (captained by D.W. Gregory), 1882 & 1884 (both captained by Billy Murdoch); together with a larger 10 by 8in. composition photograph portraying 90 individual portraits of English county cricketers of the period (the reverse pasted with two photographs of Victorian theatriacal personalities), each cricketer is captioned with his name and county, the W. Lillywhite being the only non-photographic portrait, being a repro from an artist's print, subjetcs including various Grace brothers, Daft, Hearne, Gunn, J. Lillywhite, Lord Harris, Hawke, Studd, Shrewsbury, Lockwood, Jupp, Abel et al.
After Archibald J. Stuart Wortley (1849-1905) DR W G GRACE AT THE WICKET,photogravure, published by Messrs. Manson, Swann and Morgan, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1st May 1891, printed in Berlin, 77 by 65cm. overall, minor wear to frame and some foxing to etching. A pupil of Sir John Everett Millais, Archibald J. Stuart Wortley was a portrait and sporting painter of considerable renown. This limited edition photogravure, signed both by Wortley and the Doctor, is based on an oil painting commissioned by the M.C.C. in 1888-90 by means of subscriptions which now hangs in the Long Room at Lord's.
