Attributed to Johann Heinrich Tischbein (1750 - 1812) A fine half length Portrait of the Duke of Hesse, wearing a powdered wig, a blue sash and various orders, within a feigned oval, in a fine giltwood frame, swagged with acanthus leaves, surmounted by a crown, and with swagged apron, approx. 86cms x 67cms (34" x 26 1/2"). (1) Provenance: Mecklenberg - Strelitz (see label on verso). * Frederick Landgrave of Hesse, was born in Cassel in 1720, he married Princess Mary daughter of King George II of England, and they had four children. In 1741 he was made Knight of the Garter. He ruled as Landgrave of Hessel - Cassel from 1760 - 1785. He married secondly in 1773 to Phillipe, daughter of Friederich Willhelm of Brandenburg - Schwedt, and had no children. His main residence was the Castle at Schloss Rempenheim, where he died on 31st October 1785 at Weissenstein.
Michael Dahl (1656 - 1743) Full length Portrait of 1st Earl of Ashburnham (1639 - 1736), standing and wearing Peers' robes, holding a coronet, approx. 221cms x 136cms (87" x 54"), unframed. (1) ** John Asburnham, 1st Earl of Ashburnham, 1st Viscount St. Asaph, 3rd Baron Ashburnham became the 3rd Lord Ashburnham when his elder brother died. he was Colonel of the Royal Horse Guards and was appointed Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Grey, 1st Duke of Kent, who had been Lord Chamberlain to Queen Anne. John's first two wives had died childless. He was a courtier to the early Hanoverians, with links back to the Stuart Queen Anne, in a time of transition. He was created 1st Earl of Ashburnham and 1st Viscount St. Asaph in 1730, when this portrait was painted. he is holding his earl's coronet. His father John was created 1st Lord Ashburnham in 1689 and died in 1710. The family lived at Ashburnham Place in Sussex and some were M.P.s. for Hastings. His great-grandfather John (d. 1671) and helped Charles 1 escape in 1647 and was with him when he was executed in 1649. 18 generations earlier, Philip Ashburnham and his father Bertram were executed (being office holders) by the Normans in 1066. The Anglo-Saxon spelling was "Esseburnham". His mother was Bridget, daughter of Walter Vaughn of Porhammel House, Brecknock, Wales. M.P. 1892, GCVO, KCB, JP, DL. He married Clementine, dau. of David Ogilvy, 7th Earl of Airlie, KT. 1837 - 1916 David Mitford ("Farve") 2nd Lord Redesdale, father of the famous Mitford sisters. Served in Boer War and WW1: Queen's and King's medals. Major, RAF. he married Sydney ("Muv"), dau. of Thomas Bowles, M.P. 1878 - 1958 The Hon. Lady Mosley, nee Diana Mitford, who married Bryan Guinness (later 2nd Lord Moyne) in 1928 and divorced in 1934. She remarried to Sir Oswald Mosley in 1936. 1910 - 2003. The Hon. Early 18th Century Persian Drawing Pen and Ink Drawing "Shah Tahmasp Safavi" the central pen and ink drawing depicting a half length Portrait of the Shah, wearing a turban, with Arabic text surrounding, in an orange ground decorative border, and a later larger decorative surround depicting animals, flowers etc. (1) * Sha Tahmasp Safavi (1514 - 76) ruled Iran from 1524 and is now most famous for creating the Shahnama book of Persian Kings.
Karl Anton Hickle, (1745 - 1798) "A Portrait of Charles James Fox," half length, O.O.C., approx. 61cms x 51cms (24" x 20") in heavy gilt frame. * This portrait was engraved by Mr. Young and published in March 1797. It was painted (probably before 1797) for his Aunt Lady Louisa Conolly of Castletown, Celbridge, Co. Kildare. Note: C.J. Fox shared the Liberal-Whig views of Tom Conolly - Louisa's husband. Provenance: Sold in 1965 at the Castletown Sale by the Conolly-Carew family, when purchased by Hon. Desmond Guinness. It subsequently passed to his wife Mariga, and after her death in 1989, to their son Patrick.
