* Auber (Daniel Francoise, 1782-1871). Autograph letter signed ‘Auber’, Conversatoire National de Musique, Paris, 31 January 1849, in French, to the director of an opera house noting that the Conservatoire students will be performing ‘La Pie Voleuse’ [Rossini’s ‘Thieving Magpie’] next Sunday, and Auber asked to borrow a few accessories which are only to be found in the stores of his theatre, such as the magpie and its cage, and noting that his predecessor, in similar circumstances, was kind enough to offer this service to the Conservatoire, etc., one page on printed letterhead, light uniform toning, 8vo, together with Milhaud (Darius, 1892-1974), autograph letter signed, ‘Milhaud’, n.d., in French, telling that his about to depart on the 5th October and asking if the unnamed recipient would telephone him in early November, light uniform toning, and slight marginal split without loss, one page, 4to, plus a lithographic portrait of Auber after Paul Delaroche -3
* Ferrier (Kathleen, 1912-1953). Signed vintage photograph by James Abresch, New York, c. 1950, gelatin silver print, head-and-shoulders portrait showing Ferrier with full smile, signed presentation inscription in green ink to upper right light area of image, ‘For Uncle George and Auntie Maud - that ‘golden’ pair, with all my love, Kathleen’, photographer’s credit in the negative and wetstamp to verso, a few small marginal marks, 25 x 20cm (10 x 8ins) The great and short-lived English contralto Kathleen Ferrier sang for the first time in New York in 1948, to great acclaim, and then began tours of America and elsewhere during the following few years. Her uncle George was the youngest brother of her father William. A nice specimen of an uncommon autograph. -1

Gounod’, 6 July 1880, to an unnamed friend, recommending to his benevolent interest Madame Roqueblave who has been at the Opera [Paris] for seventeen years and in the principal amphitheatre for four, telling that she speaks English very well, two pages with integral blank, 8vo, together with a photogravure portrait of the late composer by EW Savory -2
* Meyerbeer (Giacomo, 1791-1864). Autograph letter signed, ‘Meyerbeer’, [Paris, 1835?], to Emil Deschamps, in French, addressing him as his dear and famous friend, sending him an image of his work of which he is sending the original and hoping that Deschamps will be able to decipher is scrawl, saying that [Cornelie] Farcon is waiting even more impatiently that [Adolphe] Nourrit for Deschamps’ corrections in order to be able to learn it by heart, continuing to say that it will be necessary to change the expressions about the struggle ..., sending greetings from his mother and himself, two pages with integral blank leaf and address panel, remains of wax seal, 8vo, together with a related autograph letter signed from E[ugene] Scribe to Monsieur Schlessinger, no place, no date, [probably Paris, 1835], in French, telling that his composers always make him a present of their scores composed to his words, but that Meyerbeer has not yet given me ‘Les Huguenots’ (which I would like to have this morning ...), one page with integral address leaf on Scribe’s personal stationery embossed with his initials, some browning, and old marginal adhesion marks, fore-margin partly torn away, not affecting text, 8vo, plus a phorogravure portrait of the composer by EW Savory. The letters refers to Meyerbeer’s opera ‘Les Huguenots’, one of the most popular examples on the style of grand opera. Composed in five acts with a libretto by Eugene Scribe and Emil Deschamps, it premiered in Paris in 1836 Emil de Saint-Amand Deschamps (1791-1871) was a French poet who also collaborated with Hector Berlioz. -3

English School (19th/20th century): 'SS Elswick Lodge' ship portrait, watercolour and gouache titled unsigned 35cm x 62cm The cargo ship was built in 1900 by Richardson Duck and Co. of Thornaby Stockton on Tees for Weider Hopkins & Co. Newcastle on Tyne, it was sunk by a German submarine on the 20th August 1917
