Shaw (used to be Lawrence)"), to Harry Goldie, saying "You, having been one of us, get (if you want it) a gratis copy of the text of the subscribers' edition. I stipulated this in my letter to the subscribers. It's exactly the same text as they have, but has none of the illustrations... I take it, from your letter, that you'd like one of these private copies, & shall send it to you when it's ready... Address A/C Shaw 338171, Hut 105, R.A.F. Cadet College, Cranwell, Lincs", dated 4.5.26, frontispiece portrait of King Feysal after Augustus John and 31 (of 65) plates (mostly in colour) and other text illustrations after William Roberts, Eric Kennington, Paul Nash, William Nicholson and others, 4 folding coloured maps, decorative initials by Edward Wadsworth, original brown half morocco by Coverly and Sons, spine gilt, t.e.g., endpapers by Kennington, preserved in modern velvet-lined brown cloth folding box with black gilt label [O'Brien, A040]; with, unique to this copy, a photograph of H.H. Hussein ibn Ali, Grand Sharif of Mecca by Ronald Storrs (inscribed on verso "this photograph taken by Ronald Storrs on visit to Jeddah, obtained by me at Jeddah 1917"), an original photograph of T.E. Lawrence with Dr Hogarth and Col. Dawnay, an autograph letter signed from King Hussein to Harry Goldie, in Arabic, with typed English translation pasted to lower half of letter, dated 23/11/37 (19/8/19), the letter pasted onto card, with inscription on card verso "Letter from King Hussein on my leaving the Hejaz. 1919. Signed by himself, H. Goldie", and the Order of Service for T.E. Lawrence's funeral at St. Nicholas, Moreton (to which is affixed a newspaper clipping noting the chief mourners - including Mr Harry Goldie)Note: Note:The limited edition of Lawrence's epic masterpiece and a superb association copy.Captain [later Major] H.M. "Harry" Goldie had served during the Boer War in the 14th company of the 5th Imperial Yeomanry [and later 26th Imperial Yeomanry]. At some point in 1916 or 1917 Goldie was attached to the Arab Bureau in Cairo. The Arab Bureau was a section of the Cairo Intelligence Department during the First World War, established in January 1916 to harmonise British political activity in the Near East. Gilbert Clayton was its head or "Chief", David Hogarth, a Naval Intelligence officer, was Acting Director, and Lawrence was an active member. In Lowell Thomas's With Lawrence in Arabia the author refers to a trip around Jeddah "accompanied by Major Goldie, an officer attached to the British mission which had its headquarters there during the campaign". The Imperial War Museum photograph catalogue no. Q60009 is captioned "Captain Goldie on return from Bir Derwish after evacuation of Hejaz Expeditionary Force. Last British officer to leave the Emirs (Ali and Abdulla abna Husain al-Hashimi). At Yenbo." In Behind the Lawrence legend: the Forgotten Few who shaped the Arab Revolt, the author, Philip Walker, notes 'The commandant at Yenbo was the tall 39-year-old Captain Henry ('Harry') Goldie, a banker before the war, who had been engaged in important railway demolition work in the Southern sector with Captain Henry Garland.' According to family tradition, Captain [later Major] Harry Goldie joined Barclays Bank in Cairo after the war in which role he transmitted funds to Lawrence. Amongst other awards, Goldie was awarded The Order of Al Nahda [Order of Renaissance] of the Kingdom of the Hijaz, Third Class, by King Hussain Bin Ali of the Hijaz. British recipients of the Order of Al Nahda were published in the London Gazette, Goldie receiving the Order, 3rd class, on 16 January 1920, with him being listed as "Goldie, HM, T/Capt. Special List." Major Dawnay received the same order, Second Class, on 8th March 1920, at which time he was listed in the London Gazette as Head of Hejaz Operational Staff. In addition to the usual text, bound in at the beginning are four pages "Some notes on the writing of the Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. Shaw" This was a single-fold leaflet, of which about 200 copies were produced in 1927 for distribution to subscribers of the Cranwell edition. [O'Brien, A039]Although the 'incomplete' copies do not have the full tally of plates, they are in fact of greater interest to Lawrence aficionados as they were given by Lawrence himself to those, such as Goldie, who had been intimately involved in Lawrence's wartime activities in the Arab Revolt of 1916-1918.Lawrence's masterpiece is, "a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfilment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C.M. Doughty's Arabia deserta" (L. James, Oxford DNB.)

Glingler of Rome, album size 25 x 18cm, front endpaper looseNote: Note: The inscription on the front endpaper - 'Souvenir of the Italian Mission June 1906 To Miss Maclean, very sincerely, John Martin Franklin', indicates this was soon after the First Moroccan Crisis or the Tangier Crisis, an international crisis between March 1905 and May 1906 over the status of Morocco which led to the Algeciras Conference.General (Kaïd) Sir Harry Aubrey de Vere Maclean, KCMG (15th June 1848 – 5th February 1920) was a Scottish soldier and instructor to the Moroccan Army. In 1876 he went to Morocco and began his career as an army instructor for Sultan Mulai Hassan. He gained the trust of the Sultan of Morocco and his successor Moulay Abdelaziz through his service and fought against opposing tribes throughout Morocco. During his career, he was kidnapped and held for ransom after a failed first attempt. He visited the forbidden city of Tafilalt, and eventually became commander of the Sultan of Morocco's Army.Although he was loyal to his employer to a fault, he was regarded as an unofficial British agent in the United Kingdom. In June 1901 he was attached to a Special diplomatic mission from Morocco to the United Kingdom to congratulate King Edward VII on his recent accession, and the King appointed him a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) during the visit. He was physically large and used this to his advantage when disciplining insubordinates. Although maintaining his Scottish personality and expert bagpiping skill, he adopted Moorish costume.Various heirlooms of the Kaïd Sir Harry Maclean, including his ceremonial sword, pistol and Matriculation of Arms, are now housed for the Clan Maclean Heritage Trust at the Isle of Mull Museum. His portrait, by Sir John Lavery, hangs in the bar of the El Minzah Hotel in Tangier. Maclean is buried in the graveyard of St Andrew’s Church, Tangier.

After taking sick leave from his post on HMS Asia, he frequently suffered seizures on a worsening basis. Despite this, he much preferred to self-medicate rather than seek the assistance of fellow doctors. At the end of 1875, one of his housemates found his body at the foot of his bedstead. Spanish school of the first half of the 17th century."Portrait of a gentleman.Oil on copper. It presents original frame in iron and bronze.Measurements: 6,5 x 5 x 0,5 cm.This miniature of octagonal format represents a gentleman dressed in the fashion of the beginning of the 17th century. As in the rest of Europe, in the 19th century portraiture became the leading genre par excellence in Spanish painting, as a consequence of the new social structures, embodying the maximum expression of the transformation of the taste and mentality of the new bourgeois clientele. This genre embodies the permanent presence of the image of its protagonists, to be enjoyed in the intimacy of a studio, in the daily warmth of a family cabinet or presiding over the main rooms of the house.
French school ca. 1790."Portrait of a lady.Gouache on vellum.Size: 6,5 x 5 x 0,5 cm.Miniature of oval format representing a French lady dressed in the fashion of the end of the 18th century. Miniature portraits developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. They consisted of small paintings set in objects such as medallions, table clocks or small boxes. The frame of these portraits was usually oval or circular. They were executed in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, pewter or ivory, gouaches on parchment or cardboard and, from the 18th century, watercolour on ivory. This delicate art was gradually lost from the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.
Modelled on ADRIAEN BROUWER (Belgium, 1605 - 1638), end of the 19th century."Man.Oil on canvas.Measurements: 33 x 28 cm; 52 x 47 cm (frame).Male portrait in which the protagonist is shown facing the spectator, with his face slightly turned to the left. Against a neutral background that monumentalises the figure of the young man, the artist reveals very few details of the sitter. A cap and a hat stand out against the austerity of the painting. The psychological aspect of the work, defined by his mischievous look accentuated by his smile, is given greater prominence. These characteristics are very much reminiscent of Boewer's painting.Brouwer trained in Holland in the studio of Frans Hals. However, conflicts with his master led the young man to flee to Amsterdam, finally settling permanently in Antwerp in 1931, where he died prematurely only seven years later. Between 1631 and 1632 he became a teacher at the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. Despite his short career, Brouwer was the creator of a new genre of genre within genre painting, namely tavern scenes. His works were chiefly small-format and generally depicted popular, low-life characters, usually drunkards, with a certain violence in their attitudes and behaviour. This type of image allowed Brouwer to experiment with capturing emotions and expressions of pain, fear and other feelings, revealing an interest in human aspects that went beyond the traditional conception of genre painting. Despite his legal and financial problems, Brouwer was a respected painter during his lifetime and in fact both Rubens and Rembrandt acquired some of his works. Today works by Adriaen Brouwer are housed in leading art galleries around the world, including the Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Prado in Madrid, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the National Gallery in London, the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., the Kunstmuseum in Basel and the Ashmolean in Oxford.
