Through his wife Sir Humphrey Mackworth had inherited an estate with coal mining rights in Wales. Following the demise of the Society of Mines Royal in 1694 he established the Company of Mine Adventures and began to smelt copper but this was declared bankrupt in 1709 and he was accused of fraud, although with a change of government the charges were dropped. The contemporary note comments that the work was probably written by Mackworth himself, although attributed to his secretary William Shiers "a creature of Sir Humphrey's". The writer continues, "...William Waller, the mineral projector & manager of the company's mines in Cardiganshire appears to have stood high in Sir H's favor [sic], but they afterwards quarrelled" and in 1710 he "published a pamphlet intitled the ''Mine adventure laid open', wherein he endeavoured to blacken the character of Sir Humphrey".

Cattle.- Cooper (Thomas Sidney) [Studies of Cattle], 2 suites comprising 32 and 40 tinted lithograph plates respectively, no title or letterpress, first suite published by Charles Tilt, second suite by S and J Fuller, plate 10 in second suite torn and creased, occasional foxing elsewhere, contemporary green half calf, gilt, rubbed, oblong folio, c.1840. ⁂ Abbey cites two works by Cooper [Life, 113 and 114], but this work does not tally with either, not least because the publishers are different. Some of the plates are signed in the plate by Cooper and a few are dated (c.1837). The subjects, whilst mostly of cattle, also include other livestock - sheep, goats, horses, pigs, donkeys - and deer, dogs and human figures (including possibly a self-portrait).

§ Paul Lucien Dessau (British, 1909-1999) A collection of studio portraits and landscapes, mostly oils on artist's board, few oils on canvas, one oil on paper, various sizes (22) Other Notes: At the start of World War II, Paul Dessau and his brother Bernard joined the Auxiliary Fire Service, which in 1941 became the National Fire Service. A number of artists had joined the National Fire Service and a Firemen Artists' Committee was formed which included Bernard Hailstone, Leonard Rosoman, Norman Hepple and Robert Coram, as well as Dessau. After the war, Dessau and his wife, whom he had married in 1935, moved out of London and settled in the country where he pursued a career as a successful portrait painter. Condition report: Condition varies. Mostly oils on artist's board. Some surface dirt. Two oils on canvas - one without a stretcher. One oil on paper. Some edges worn. Some paint chipping to the oil on canvas of a landscape. All except for one unframed. Oil on canvas without a stretcher - Portrait of a woman - left hand edge damaged. Mark Gertler (British, 1891-1939) Harlequin watercolour, unframed 34 x 27cm (13 x 11in) Provenance: A gift from Mark Gertler to Professor and Mrs John Mavrogordato, with whom he stayed at Charmouth, Dorset, and by descent within the Mavrogordato family Other Notes: In 1908, Mark Gertler enrolled at the Slade School of Art, University College, London. During the four years he spent at the Slade, Gertler was a contemporary of Paul Nash, Edward Wadsworth, Christopher Nevinson, Dora Carrington and Stanley Spencer. The present watercolour shows Gertler's use of colour and enthusiasm for fairgrounds. His painting, "Merry-Go-Round" (now at the Tate), and another painting from 1915 entitled "Swing Boats" - now sadly lost - may have been inspired by rides at the annual fair on Hampstead Heath. Mark Gertler was a friend of John Mavrogordato (1882-1970), the Greek scholar, and his wife, Christine, and spent holidays in Charmouth, Dorset, with the family. Gertler's portrait of John Nicolas Mavrogordato is at Exeter College, Oxford (1926). Unframed and on buff paper.

'A visit to the opera at the Edinburgh International Festival produced devastating results for Scottish artist John Bellany. Within hours of John the Baptist's head almost landing on his lap, he had rushed to the studio to produce a Salome which he considers among his best works for years. ''I had been at the Folkopera production and I found the whole thing so uplifting from the first to the very last, so moving and inspiring, that at the end I got into the car and straight to the studio,'' he said. Sitting in the front row for the production of the Strauss opera, based on the play by Oscar Wilde, Bellany was so inspired by the experience that he worked through the night and produced the work, which is 5ft by 4ft, by 11am the next day.' An exhibition of the work of John Bellany RA, including a self-portrait of the artist with his friend David Bowie, opened in September 2017 at Fortnum and Mason, Piccadilly, curated by former head of British Art at the Tate, Robert Upstone. The exhibition will show works by John Bellany hung around the Piccadilly store and will run until the end of October 2017.

A collection of six sulphide glass paperweights, including a small antique French weight with a bust of Napoleon after Andrieu, another with a young Queen Victoria, a third depicts Robert Burns, a facetted Cristal d'Albret weight with bust of Albert Schweitzer, a modern Baccarat Zodiac weight with Cancer the crab and an antique Belgian weight with an annonymous portrait bust on a mottled ground (6) There are chips to the Baccarat Zodiac weight, Robert Burns has been broken though the neck of the sulphide, there are light bruises to the surface of Napoleon and Victoria, but not serious.
