Sampson Towgood Roche (Irish 1759-1847) after Sir Peter Paul Rubens The Peasant Dance Signed Watercolour 20 x 30cm; 8 x 12in Roche was a portrait miniature painter, born in Carrick-on-Suir, Waterford. Born deaf and dumb he showed an aptitude for art at an early age so was sent to Dublin to study the masters and do copies. This work is possibly from that period. He later established a thriving portrait miniature practice in Bath.
Studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A. (1769-1830) Portrait of Anna Allnutt (1774-1819) Oil on canvas 76 x 64cm; 30 x 25in Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter until sold in 2015, along with other family portraits, by a direct descendant Anna Allnutt was the sister of John Allnutt (1773-1863) of Clapham, who was one of Lawrence’s most importrant patrons. When Lawrence died he owed John Allnutt £5,000 (the equivalent to around £300,000 today). Lawrence painted or drew almost every member of Allnutt’s family including himself, both his wives, their children and his mother in law and also the sitter’s daughter, Maria Woodgate and daughter in law, Harriott West. The Victoria & Albert museum has dated the portrait by the sitter’s attire to c.1810-15. Lawrence was in Paris for several weeks in 1815 and the portrait may have been completed in his absence.
Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A. (1769-1830) Portrait of a gentleman, possibly William Scott, Baron Stowell (1745-1836) Oil on canvas in a gilded period frame topped with a detachable coronet of a Baron 77 x 63cm; 30 x 25in Provenance: Private Collection, Lincolnshire. William Scott, Baron Stowell was a famous English judge who was knighted in 1788, made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1793 and judge of the High Court of Admiralty in 1798. He was raised to the peerage in 1821 as Baron Stowell taking his title from the name of his estate, Stowell Park, Gloucester. Stowell married for the second time in 1813 at the age of 68 and this present portrait may have been painted to celebrate this event with the detachable Coronet added to the frame in 1821. Sir Thomas Lawrence is also recorded as having painted Stowell in c.1823.
