Sargent thanks his correspondent for their letter and explains that he is leaving tomorrow, 'so the next rendezvous is London - I will listen for your aeroplane', further writing 'There has been a fearful question about my lapsed American passport, and yesterday it was thought I would have to go to Paris & get another one before being allowed to leave Boulogne. But the P.M. tells me the difficulty…..will be all right' and continuing 'God knows what will happen about Arras church and the other things I have done. I think the Ministry of Information considers everything their property….You have been awfully kind and providential to me out here - and I am “yours till death”. Any time the Commander in Chief comes to England I will do the best for you. I hope I shall be seeing Sybil soon and singing your praises'. A few very light, extremely minor creases, VG Philip Sassoon (1888-1939) British politician, art collector and social host. Sargent painted Sassoon's portrait in 1923. Sargent was commissioned as a war artist by the British Ministry of Information in 1918 and his works at this time including various paintings from Arras, including the ruined cathedral.

Signed and inscribed attractive original set of seven 4 x 6 photographs, all of them showing a young Raimu in different close portrait poses. The seven images have been individually carefully affixed to slightly larger cards, framed in wood and glazed to an overall of 32.5 x 8. Raimu writes the inscription over six of the photographs `To Rip - Thanking - for my first great success - The more it changes.. - Cordially - Raimu´, starting on the second image to the left and concluding with his signature `Raimu´ to the seventh and last to the right. This is also the joint finest graded example of this unique bust. The svelte slopes of neck, cheek and shoulder are so perfectly and subtly engraved, giving the impression of freshly pressed snow. A velvet lustre shimmers and dances over each curve breathing life into the regnal depiction. Flipping the coin over, a bold and precisely engraved royal shield meets the eye. This contrast perfectly complements each side of the coin, accenting both the softness of royal flesh and the cold strength of aristocracy. All of this boldly stands out against beautifully reflective fields of a subtle olive tone that under direct light erupts into a blazing yellow. Truly a world class example, having graced the Dangar Collection, Slaney Collection and British Collection. Befitting only of the cream of numismatic collectors. Richard Yeo (c.1720-79)Richard Yeo first came to prominence in 1746 upon his creation of the official medal for the Battle of Culloden. From 1749, he was assistant engraver at the Royal Mint under the great John Sigmund Tanner. In 1775, Yeo officially succeeded Tanner as Chief Engraver at the mint. However, as a result of Tanner’s failing eyesight and other health issues Yeo had been acting effectively as Chief Engraver since 1760 but without the appropriate pay. This was amended in 1768 when he was awarded £500 for past labours. Tanner designed and engraved British coinage as Chief until his death in 1779. Yeo was an extremely accomplished engraver producing several patterns and circulation issues throughout his career and his particularly fine style brought a delicate realism to coins of the period.Yeo was also a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists (1761-91) and founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He exhibited his works at the Academy in both 1769 and 1770. Terence Cuneo CVO OBE RGI, British 1907-1996 - 'Sketches of H.R.H. Prince Charles' for the painting of The Coronation of H.M. Jean Cooke, British 1927-2008 - Self-portrait, 2004; oil on canvas, 61 x 50.7 cm (ARR) Provenance:purchased by Leonard Manasseh RA from the Royal Academy, London, Summer Exhibition, 2004; Bellmans, Winchester, Interiors Auction including works from the Collection of Leonard Manasseh, 27th June 2018, lot 822; private collection, UK purchased from the above Exhibited:Royal Academy, London, Summer Exhibition, 2004, no.31 (according to the label attached to the reverse and copy of the exhibition catalogue) Note: this is a very late self-portrait from her long career, that deals very movingly with the feeling of aging and possibly with the tragic experience of the artist in 2004. The artist is mournfully dressed in black, the garden and house behind her swiftly painted in blazes of orange and brown. In 2003, the artist's house in Blackheath, that had been her home since her marriage to John Bratby, had burnt down. The palette and fiery expression on the artist's face are possibly a reference to this sad event. This work was originally owned by the architect Leonard Manasseh OBE RA (1916-2017), who was a fellow RA and sat on the selection committee with Cooke for the 1984 RA Summer Exhibition. Cooke exhibited in the 1960s with the Leicester Galleries and her work is now in public collections including the Ruth Borchard Collection, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery and the Tate. Cooke's work was recently exhibited to much acclaim in the exhibition 'Postwar Modern, New Art in Britain 1945-1965' at the Barbican Centre, London.
