ISLE OF THE DEADItalian 2 Fogli (39" x 55" )Fine- Folded; Artwork by Rinaldo Geleng RKO, 1947Boris Karloff and Ellen Drew are featured on this Italian poster, the best of any posters created for this horror story with art by Rinaldo Geleng. Drew never looked sexier, and the vampire bat's use over Karloff's portrait is genuinely inspired. There are small holes around the border and tape staining on the right side, but one on the left. There is a tear in the upper crossfold with tape supporting it on the verso. Tempra paint on the verso. This is a perfect candidate for restoration.Set on a Greek island during the First Balkan War, the island is quarantined, and the residents die off one by one. As they pass, a young woman is accused of being a vorvolaka-or a vampire. The picture was part of the Val Lewton horror series created at RKO during the 1940s. The films were known for their brilliant use of suspense, mood, and atmosphere to develop horrific sensations. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, April 18th. STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDIFull Bleed Polish (26.5" x 38" ); Vader StyleFine+ Rolled; Artwork by Witold Dybowski 20th Century Fox, 1984According to Stephen Sansweet's Star Wars Poster Book, "Polish artist Dybowski incorporated photographs of camera parts into the composition of the explosive Darth Vader portrait. The concluding installment of the beloved original Star Wars trilogy, directed by Richard Marquand. After opening with a bravura rescue sequence at the palace of Jabba The Hutt, it lives up to the saga's title with an ambitious three-tier climactic battle, combining fierce starship dogfights, a forest conflict involving the teddy-bear-like Ewoks, and the ultimate lightsaber duel between Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and his father Darth Vader (David Prowse). This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, April 18th. TRON(2) Japanese B2 (20" x 29")Very Fine Rolled Buena Vista, 1982This wonderful lot features the two styles used in Japan for the ground-breaking film. These colorful Japanese B2s put brightness and bravery on display. One in the form of the defiant character of Tron dead center, showing off the film's impressive visual savvy. These stunning rolled Japanese posters offered here feature a great portrait of Jeff Bridges in the form of the defiant character of Tron, and the other immersing us in the video game battle. The English style has pinholes in the top two corners and some small scuffs in the character's right arm. All are supported with tape on the verso. With border wear as well. The cast style has pinholes in the upper corners. When Steven Lisberger first saw the video game Pong, he was inspired to write a story that took place entirely within the software world of a mainframe computer. This story would eventually become the movie Tron (1982). One of the first films to use computer animation and graphics extensively, Tron quickly became a landmark in filmmaking technology. Starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and David Warner, the film received mixed-to-positive reviews on its initial release but has become a cult classic in the years since, spawning a sequel (Tron: Legacy) and a TV series (Tron: Uprising). This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, April 18th. When he died his collection of thirty-eight pictures was bought for the nation (for approximately £60,000) and formed the basis of the National Gallery, founded in 1824 and first situated in Angerstein's house at 100 Pall Mall. It included Rubens' Rape of the Sabine Women, Claude's Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba, Rembrandt's Woman taken in Adultery, and Sebastiano del Piombo's Raising of Lazarus which Angerstein had bought from the celebrated Orléans Collection in 1798 for 3500 guineas and which became item No.1 in the National Gallery Catalogue. Angerstein's house soon became too small and the present gallery designed by William Wilkins was built between 1832 and 1838. Philip Miles was a railway magnate who bought Leigh Court near Bristol and filled it with a fine collection of Old Master paintings. It included the famous "Altieri Claudes", originally purchased by William Beckford in 1799 for the then astounding price of £6825 for the pair. The collection was dispersed at Christie's in 1884.
